We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Bergasse and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexis, why did you pursue a creative career?
I knew early on that I wanted to eventually pursue a creative career because making art always made me so happy and I enjoyed creating with just about any medium! And who doesn’t want to make a career out of something they enjoy? Not to mention there’s so much creative freedom. I can experiment as much as I want to find my style and creative process.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I absolutely love using colour. I’m not afraid to grab my coloured gels and throw them on my lights to create interesting colour combinations for portraits or product shots. I think this is also one of the reasons I love music photography. Every artist has a different stage presence and lighting setup and I love experimenting with my editing to create images that reflect that. I’m all for doing funky edits and incorporating patterns, text, overlays – you name it. It’s fun to stand out! Don’t be afraid to experiment!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m from around Toronto so I’d definitely take them over to Kensington market for some shopping! There’s so many interesting shops around there including thrift shops! Another place to check out (especially this time of year) is the Christmas market at the distillery district! Tons of food vendors as well as the Christmas ambiance on cobblestone streets. If they wanted to see the CN tower, we could take the ferry over to Toronto island to see the cityscape at night. There’s even a cool dance club above Lee’s Palace called dance cave that plays the best music to dance around and have fun!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Obviously my professors where a HUGE help with me finding my creative direction and style while I was at school, and my friends have absolutely been my biggest supporters the last few years with encouraging me to shoot for the stars. I can’t thank them enough for all of the love and support they’ve shown me – I appreciate it SO much.
