Meet Alexis Kemp | CEO and Handcrafter of My Sister’s Scrub

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Kemp and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexis, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
The principle that matters most to me, especially when operating and running a business, is authenticity. Authenticity simply encourages a person to be true to their own personality and values regardless of what may occur. Running a small business may not always be but I make it a point to be myself and stick to my overall goals no matter what. Emphasizing the sisterhood component that My Sister’s Scrub revolves around allows me to connect to my customers. It’s so important to always be genuine rather than “salesy”; genuineness will always speak volumes along with the high quality products that I handcraft.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets me apart from others is that My Sister’s Scrub, MSS, is curated around my personal sisterhood. We emphasize three main points; self-care, skincare, sisterhood. Making self-care fun is a huge priority for us, so we tie in skincare by providing high quality skincare products, and by vocalizing the importance of sisterhood. Each product is named after a sister that is close to me and is labeled with their initials or a sisterly related name such as “sissy”, “sister”, “sis”. Once a customer purchases a product (s), they are known as a Scrub Sister. This makes it so much fun when interacting! On social media, we do weekly sisterly check-ins as a part of the self-care aspect letting our Scrub Sisters know we’re all apart of a Skincare Sisterhood. I am beyond proud of where my brand has gone today. From winning power pitch contests, shipping internationally, surpassing sales goals, to speaking to the youth within my community about entrepreneurship. I got to where I am today, business-wise, by not comparing my journey to anyone else’s. It is so easy to sometimes compare our process and what we don’t have, yet, to the things that other businesses may have. Starting my business young made this a constant thought in my mind that I had to get over. Once I did, I started focusing on my goals and each step that I could take to paint my bigger picture. I also developed a mindset that allowed me to not only paint my bigger picture but to also focus on the successful moment I was currently in. I had to learn to be grateful for every positive turning point in my small business rather than always wanting and hoping for more because each step means something. Success literally doesn’t come over night and I aspire to not only have success within MSS, but sustainability. Everyone has a different story and only you have the power to write and create your own. I want everyone to know that MSS is more than just skincare, it’s a Sisterhood. I want other women to know that they can feel comfortable in their natural skin state, focus on their personal self-care routines, along with making it a point to bond with other women and form friendships and sisterly circles with them.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If me and my best friend were to hang out over the weekend, we’d have a whole itinerary of things to do! For a week long trip, there definitely has to be FOOD. First stop, Bossanova for the best Brazilian Cuisine and Sangrias. Next we’d have to go to brunch at Blaqhaus for the best Chicken and Waffles and mimosas, along with dinner at a steakhouse please! Mastros or Ruth’s Chris is always impeccable. We’re huge fans of the Breakfast Club for a good brunch, Cork and Batter in Inglewood, and of course The Serving Spoon. I also love coffee shops that are aesthetically pleasing with good coffee! Bottega Louie is a really cute coffee shop with pastries and coffee and also an Italian restaurant. The Nook Coffee Bar is sooo good and has a great atmosphere. As for hanging out, we love interactive things such as Dave and Busters, Santa Monica Pier or Venice Beach, arts and crafts on the beach, a night out in Hollywood, and of course Farmers Markets to support locally owned businesses. Live music is also fun as well as escape rooms. I honestly love places that are welcoming and open. Me and my bestfriend love spontaneous adventures and I feel that these are best moments ever. Lastly can’t forget the best ice cream shop in Culver City, Handel’s Icecream.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to dedicate this shoutout to my mother Vicki, my sister Alexandria, my Aunt Deanna, and my bestfriend Cydni. These four individuals, as female figures in my life, have given me different core keys that have helped me not only run my business but to succeed in other areas of life. My mother and my sister encourage me daily to continue to chase my dreams even when it becomes tough. My mother also makes it a point to remind me to give myself grace at times that I may be too hard on myself as a small business owner. My Aunt Deanna, a franchise mogul, always encourages me to stay true to myself, perfect my craft, and to help others, as I see fit, along the way. My bestfriend Cydni is also a great encouragement in helping me stay focus on my overall goals, and reminding me of what MSS means to others. These four women are truly ones that I look up to, and I do not know where I’d be without such an amazing support system. They’re literally my biggest supporters and I appreciate them more than I can ever express.
