We had the good fortune of connecting with Alice Funk and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alice, what principle do you value most?
Be kind to others. I’m not sure when this became a value that mattered to me, but when I look back this is something I find myself doing all the time. In my personal life, I have experienced losing a loved one and understand what it means when someone lives a life with a life-threatening disease. This doesn’t just affect the person that lost her/his life or the person that has to manage the disease, it affect all those around the person who care and provide support. Being kind doesn’t cost you anything or require you to make any additional effort, but it might just make someone’s day that much better. We don’t know what others are going through so be kind.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Starting a business isn’t glamorous. You have to want to do this more than you want to eat or sleep. You have to want to learn everything about the business. Most importantly, you have to put your ego aside. When I first started, my focus was on growing the business so I hired others to do the work I didn’t want to do. While they did a great job, the business wasn’t growing as the speed I wanted. I slowly started to take on these responsibilities and found that the more I learned about these roles the more I could put my personality into the final product. What I’ve found out is that the more I put myself out there the more this connected with my audience. They could see that I was real, vulnerable, and just like them. You’re going to run into a lot of challenges and a lot of people telling you that you can’t. At the end of the day, you need to remind yourself why you are doing what you are doing. For FunkFitCo, it’s for the all women that have felt that they don’t quite fit into the right size bucket. You fit here, and you should feel that you fit anywhere else.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There is so much to do in LA that people who have lived here their entire life will still find new things around every corner. My best friend loves beaches, food, and Disneyland! We’d start the week in Malibu, have a breakfast at Blue Jam Café, window shop on Rodeo, visit The Getty, walk Hollywood Blvd and ride the double-decker bus (I don’t care if it’s touristy, I have fun every single time!), go bowling at Highland Park Bowl, spend an evening at Griffith Observatory, load up on some great vegan spots (Crossroads!) , and most importantly finish the week with a day or two at Disneyland. The biggest problem she would have with leaving me in charge of planning the week is that I wouldn’t plan for her to fly back home so she’d have to stay another week. Oops, oh well.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
How much space are you going to let me have to list out everyone?! My first shoutout goes to all the women I have met or have heard struggle with their body image because their clothes do not fit their body. They are truly my inspiration for starting FunkFitCo. Women shouldn’t have to settle with what’s available when there are other options. FunkFitCo wants to be that other option when it comes to the athleisure wear they choose.
My second shoutout goes to Michael. We met two years ago, and he has been a great friend. We talked about where I saw myself in five years, and the conversation went to talking about women’s struggles. It was like a light bulb went off when he asked, “…so why aren’t you doing anything about it?” Since then, he’s been there and supportive every step of the way!
Lastly, FunkFitCo wouldn’t be here without our customers, family, friends, photographers, videographers, models, and everyone else we have partnered with to bring us here today. This shoutout and my infinite gratitude goes to all of them. Thank you for your support!
