We had the good fortune of connecting with Alice Robert and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alice, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I launched my business in Jan 2015, and was the only person working in/on the business up until January 2020. I had to wear so many different hats, from designing, hand-making each piece of jewellery, packaging, shipping, doing customer service, organising influencer collaborations, taking content, modelling, editing shoots, making/editing the website, etc. I did it all, and towards the end of 2019, due to the business’ incremental growth year after year, I was not doing any of those jobs to the best of my ability anymore- I barely slept, barely had time to see friends and family. In December 2019, a girl reached out to me who had been following my business journey on Instagram, and offered to help out with some tasks. She became my first employee- and it changed my life.
I quickly learned that building out a strong team and delegating responsibilities was by far the most important thing I could do to be able to spend my time wisely, working ON the growth of the business, rather than in the business.
We now have an incredible team of 5 full time staff, and have even held a few internship programs since. Having a dedicated, hard-working, and incredibly talented team has entirely changed the business for the best, and I owe all the success of the business to these ladies.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started making jewellery in 2004, with my mum, and we would sell these pieces at the local markets around Sydney. Jewellery-making was one of the many creative activities that mum and I did together, and it’s thanks to her that I started, and continued down this creative path.
When I launched The Littl, I had roughly 10 designs to begin with- all were hand-made by me, and I had done all the research necessary to ensure I was delivering a very high quality product that would last- this was very important to me. These core values have since always been at the forefront of each new design that I bring out, and to this day, almost all of our pieces are still hand-made with love by our team, in our Sydney studio. I truly believe that this set my brand apart from most, as there is something much more personal and intimate about receiving custom hand-made pieces, from a brand that truly cares about their customer and their experience. Since then, I have designed over 500 different designs which are showcased on the website. Designing unique, feminine, and meaningful pieces is and always will be my favourite thing to do.
I am incredibly proud of where The Littl is right now- I never in my life thought I’d one day be running a multi-million dollar business, built around a passion of mine. Of course, like in any business, there have been many obstacles, however, we have overcome each of those hurdles, learnt, and always set up systems to avoid it happening again in the future.
I’ve learnt that I can’t control everything- and that’s okay! It’s important to trust the team, trust the process, and trust that whatever comes at us, we’ll get through it.
I’d love for the world to know how much time, effort, love and care goes into every step of the process- from designing, hand-making, and packaging orders, to the incredible customer experience and service- it all truly is a labour of love from our dedicated Littl team, and I couldn’t be prouder about it!
I’m also growing the Littl empire! I’ve just launched “Littl Swim”, which is a luxury sustainable swimwear label made from a beautiful fabric made of recycled plastics- super excited to see where this goes in the next few years. I’m also launching a third business soon, in the beauty industry instead of fashion this time! It’s very different for me but I love a challenge, and I can’t wait to reveal the product and launch later this year.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m quite new to LA and still discovering it myself, but I love it so far! A few of my fave places and must do’s: – Malibu: Malibu Horseback Riding, and going to Malibu Farm for lunch and hanging out by the beach.
– Solvang: going for a couple days- I’ve been a few times for a little mid-week getaway and it is beautiful. Wineries to visit are Dove Cote, Pence, Peake, and Presqu-ile Winery for a delicious lunch and drinks. My favourite restaurant there for dinner is Sear Steakhouse.
– Delilah in West Hollywood for dinner- great 1920’s vibes!
– La Mesa for more of a party vibe after dinner- great music and ambience.
Super excited to discover more of LA!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d definitely love to shoutout my family for passing onto me the work and ethical values that I now possess. From a very young age, I always looked up to both my parents- they were in my eyes the hardest-working people I knew, with a heart of gold, and were a huge source of inspiration for me. Fast forward a few years, I can see so much of myself in them, and it truly is thanks to them that I am where I am now, with my businesses.
Of course, I’ve also met many people over the years who have now become now close friends, that have inspired me, helped me, and motivated me tremendously. I am so grateful to have such a great group of young entrepreneurs around me, and we support each other as much as we can.
