We had the good fortune of connecting with Alison Bunce and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alison, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Just because a product label says it’s gluten-free, doesn’t mean it healthy. The most important thing on a product label is the list of ingredients. I hope attention to ingredients, not just product claims, becomes more mainstream. Sometimes ingredients, contain additional ingredients. What you put into food affects it’s taste and nutrient density, but also how the body absorbs said nutrients. Bunce Bakes values ingredient integrity and transparency, citing all ingredients and only using the highest quality, pure ingredients – no fillers, preservatives or hidden bleached ingredients.
What should our readers know about your business?
Bunce Bakes, LLC is a gluten-free and eco-friendly, healthy baked goods company based out of Malibu, CA. We sell cookie-muffins and mini-muffins in local LA markets and ship nationwide online at buncebakes.com. The mission of Bunce Bakes is to be kind to your body, and kind to the Earth. We pride ourselves in our ingredients. We source the highest quality ingredients available, all of which are Certified Organic and Certified Fair Trade. All of our products are made without refined or bleached ingredients, preservatives, fillers or sugar – we sweeten our treats with organic honey and organic maple syrup. Since nuts are a major allergen across the globe, all of our products are nut-free. I’m most proud of the integrity we hold with our product standards, our commitment to being as sustainable as possible, and our dedication to giving back to our community.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A perfect day would be a Bunce day in Malibu. The morning starts with cookie-muffins, coffee, and a walk on the beach. Next, we’d surf a local break in Malibu then head over to Zinqué Malibu for brunch. Next we’d head the the Malibu Racquet Club to hit a few balls, then enjoy a beverage at the restaurant at the club. Afterwards, we’d take a scenic drive over to Agoura Hills with the windows down, and walk around Malibu Creek Park. We’d have a casual dinner outside at The Old Place- man do they know how to dress a baked potato. The day ends with classic old film on the deck at home, accompanied by a few Bunce Bakes treats.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m extremely grateful for Malibu’s local community support. Also for the support of UCLA Health. I’ve been volunteering with UCLA Health for the last year in my personal time. Since I launched Bunce Bakes, I started volunteering baking classes with The Tiverton Hotel (a UCLA Health hotel for hospital patients and their families). The Tiverton Hotel staff has been so kind and supportive of my business, I feel so grateful to be able to partner with them.
