We had the good fortune of connecting with Alison Stroming and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alison, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
A few years prior to launching my business in 2018 I was invited to design a collection with another dancewear brand. I learned a lot from that opportunity as it was my first experience to work one on one with a business. After about a year with the company, my mom and friends were like you can just do this yourself, and so they gave me that push to pursue a business. I originally started selling just two designs through my Instagram which then grew into the launch of my own business, AS dancewear. Originally designing was just a fun hobby for me but it is now a new passion of mine and something I am proud of!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been dancing since I was two years old and now have been a professional ballerina for about 12 years. Ballet is one of the most difficult and demanding art forms but I could not imagine my life without it. It took many years of intense training, dedication, strength, and sacrifice to get to where I am today! One of the biggest obstacles being a dancer was simply myself. I was constantly comparing myself to others, putting pressure on myself, and would sometimes be my worst critic. Over time I gained the strength and confidence to just believe in myself and continue to strive to be the best version of myself and as an artist. Over the years, I’ve learned to really just focus on myself and whatever happens is meant to be. Easier said than done, but dance is a beautiful career and you really just have to be present and enjoy the journey.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I moved out to LA from New York City about four years ago with the intention of only staying a few months… let’s just say LA is really growing on me! I love everything LA has to offer from the beaches, hikes, and of course, food! If my best friend was visiting down I would definitely start the day off with a hike around the hills, followed up by a drive to Malibu and stop by Malibu Pier for lunch, and then head back to West Hollywood for dinner and drinks!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have been blessed to have the most supportive family, particularly my mother. My mom has always been there for me since day one to support my dreams and inspire me to be my best self. I would not be the strong, ambitious woman that I am today without her love and support. I also have to thank all of the young dancers out there who believe in me and have been behind me since the day I launched my brand. I only strive to continue to inspire you all to pursue your dreams, too!
