We had the good fortune of connecting with Alvaro Sanz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alvaro, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I am really an impulsive person and I have never made a marketing plan or anything similar. Things came by themselves. I imagined that at some point in my life I wanted to have a production company, but at the age of 22 I was offered to be a professor at several universities and suddenly I was a professor and I was able to found my own production company.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have always defended that I am not an artist. I am a real worker. That is what distinguishes me from other colleagues with a specific talent. Being a hyperactive person, I can’t stop thinking, moving, producing, having ideas… and luckily I carry out many of them and they end up being a real project. Perhaps one of my values is that I am absolutely not afraid of anything. I like to work alone, but I can also be involved in an international campaign with 40 people and I will feel just as good. For me, one of the lessons that I take from all this is that nothing is so important or relevant and that nothing is really going to end your career and that few things are going to be so important that you have to do them no matter what.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in a small town of 200 inhabitants in the countryside, in the northeast of Spain, very close to the sea. What excites me about this place is that I don’t need to make a specific tourist route with people to show them the beauty of the place. In fact I have always pursued this, living in a place beautiful enough not to depend on tourist icons. But without a doubt, if someone came to see me, I would tell them not to miss spending an afternoon in Girona, which is very close to home, 20 minutes away, and to take a break to see the sunrise at Cap de Creus, a natural park amazing.
As for restaurants, I would say that the gastronomic offer here is impressive and that it is very difficult to go wrong, but a “Botifarra amb mongetes” and an “escalivada” with bread with tomato is a sure hit. The good thing about this region is that the sea is 20 minutes away and the snow is 45 minutes away. So I would tell him to also get lost in the volcanic area of La Garrotxa and walk inside a volcano, ending at the foot of Canigó, a mountain full of symbolism.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I think someone who marked my destiny was my professor of Theory of form at university. When I was studying the last year of my degree, he proposed me to the University administration to be a professor, even without having finished my studies. That meant that I had some income, I was able to fund my own production company, and also that I discovered the exciting world of teaching, which I have never abandoned since then. José Baltanás, without knowing it, changed my destiny.
