We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Salcido and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura, how do you think about risk?
As the saying goes “Life’s a Risk” Taking risks is necessary to move forward and build. If you don’t take the risk you won’t know if it works or not. I love taking risks in what I do. Putting out new merchandise or adding a twist to my art, will it work out? Maybe, Either way it’s a learning experience for me. I have no fear of failure because I know I’ll keep moving forward and finding ways to make it work for me.
The biggest risk I now face is doing art full time. That is hella scary but it also excites me at the possibilities that will come with it, mainly being able to have more time with my kids.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art comes from my love of Teen Angel art and graffiti. Everything from the beauty of Cholas with big hair to the fine details and colors of graff. The culture and history. My business started with just drawing all day not thinking of actually selling but then started having ppl wanting to buy and it’s been nonstop since then. I’ve learned to not give up, to keep going regardless of how many followers, how many sales, who likes you who doesn’t cuz it’s something I love to do. When you love doing something (in my case art) nothing will stop you from continuing to do it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Food trucks and restaurants is where I’m at haha I love food, you can’t go wrong with some bomb tacos or seafood. Look for any art show that might be going on to look and support. If anyone is painting a mural it’s always fun to go check it out. Meet other fellow artist 👩🏽🎨
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shout out to my hubby Pedro Salcido from Flat Black Shop for inspiring me to become more and do more. Artist like Mrs Spriderface, Deity, Ms Yellow, Devls. Ladies from Few and Far that are super inspiring. All the small businesses that have been supporting my art nonstop And followers. My girl DJ Esa who aways has an ear and lots of support.
