We had the good fortune of connecting with Alyssa Terry & Natalia Strawn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alyssa and Natalia, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Let’s Get Haunted has never pretended to be something it’s not. When choosing a story to cover on our show, we research and discuss only things that we find interesting, that way the content never feels forced. We really are just two best friends trying to get a rise out of each other each episode! Cultivating a community around our podcast has also been very important to us. We like to think of ourselves and our listeners as members of a niche corner of the internet where we can nerd out over all things spooky and paranormal. We encourage people to continue the conversation online after they’ve finished an episode; whether that be with each other in fan discussion groups or with us on any of our social media platforms. We refer to our fans as our “Haunted Fam” and we love hearing their theories and reactions to our stories! We also definitely don’t take ourselves too seriously. Although we sometimes do delve into the darker side of humanity during our show, our audience knows that first and foremost we’re here to provide some lighthearted (sometimes self-deprecating) entertainment.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Let’s Get Haunted (“LGH”) is an independent, female-run podcast that first started in February of 2019. The two of us research, interview, edit, and produce our show from start to finish by ourselves; it definitely isn’t always easy! Each week, we rotate taking turns telling each other a story. One week, Aly researches and writes an episode to tell Nat. The next week, Nat researches and writes an episode to tell Aly. While topics vary widely, they always have a spooky theme and are based in true stories from around the world. For example, we have covered topics such as: The Kennedy Curse, Mind-Matter Interaction, Randonautica, Operation Wandering Soul, Poveglia Island, and many other “mysterious” events, people, places, and moments throughout history. An average episode can last anywhere from 1 – 3 hours once completed, and can take anywhere from 24 hours to 2 weeks just to research, depending on the topic. Time management is key to getting quality episodes produced, especially since both of us have our hands in other creative projects. Being an independent podcast in an industry driven by expanding new media companies and big advertisers has also presented a challenge for us. We have unfortunately had companies reach out to us before with offers of funding and resources, only to be met with lowball contracts aimed at monetizing our brand in inauthentic ways. For these reasons and more, we have chosen to navigate the saturated new media landscape as independent creators, beholden to no one. While this has some advantages (such as complete creative control), it can also feel frustrating to compare our resources with those of a well-funded podcast. That being said, neither of us are strangers to being the underdog, and our podcast thrives in this setting! While there seems to be no shortage of podcasts these days, what sets us apart from the pack is our show’s ability to captivate an audience with a well-researched story, while simultaneously not taking ourselves too seriously along the way. We begin each show with our own “personal hauntings”, or any interesting mishap that may have occurred in our personal lives that week. From the time Nat rescued an injured possum on the side of the freeway by crowdfunding the surgery it needed, to the time Aly got her credit card stolen and tracked down the thief to get her card back (instead of just cancelling the card like a normal person), we like to start each episode by poking fun at ourselves and letting our audience into our personal lives before diving into the topic at hand. Our first month of producing episodes, we had around 5,000 streams. This month we set a new record, surpassing 80,000 streams in just 28 days! It’s rewarding to be able to see the streams increase as our podcast gets better and better. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for LGH!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Most of our favorite places in LA revolve around food and nightlife, which should surprise no one who knows us personally. Supposing there were no pandemic and a friend from out of town were visiting us, we’d definitely make sure to take them out on the town. Some of our favorite eateries include: The Brothers Sushi in Encino, Broken Spanish in DTLA, Cha Cha Chicken in Santa Monica, Bone Kettle in Pasadena, Baco Mercat in DTLA, Gasolina in the valley, and Perch for the stunning views of LA’s skyline. For nightlife, we’d have to make stops during the week at themed clubs and bars like Break Room 86, The Blind Barber, and Clifton’s.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There’s too many people to list! Our families and partners are definitely our biggest cheerleaders with anything that we do, as are our friends. We definitely have to thank everyone who has ever come on our show as a guest or helped us with advice, tech support, and encouragement – especially when we were first starting out. We have been fortunate to have so many talented friends working in creative fields who have helped us get to where we are today. To name a few: Alexa Dillon designed our beautiful logo, Steven Suptic created our theme song, Derek Estevez-Olsen let us borrow his microphone for our very first episode, and Jamie McCune took our very first “official” podcast photo together! We would be nothing without every single friend and family member that makes up our incredible support system!
