We had the good fortune of connecting with October BLU and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi October, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
Now, it is true that the nature of society is to create, among its citizens, an illusion of safety; but it is also absolutely true that the safety is always necessarily an illusion. Artists are here to disturb the peace. — James Baldwin This quote has been the drive in my artistic pursuit. It means far more than to step out of your comfort zone. This quote to me, means walk away, light a match and set all frames of comfort on fire so you’re not tempted to go back. Artists are truth tellers and the truth has no place in warm and fuzzy slippers. I love the “ do something energy” I feel when reading this.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been a working artist for over 4 years. Merging my poetry and painting to create African centered jewelry. I’m here doing what I love, because I decided to say yes to my passion. The most important thing I’ve learned is to set a value and add the tax on what I offer. Because even in a room full of similar souls, no one shines like I do.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Assuming your a little jet lag, we’ll spend the first night in. I cook a mean vegan meal! Binge watching See on Apple TV. The next day we’d hit up SeaBird Kitchen in Long Beach, then walk off our full along the boardwalk. Later that night hit up the arts district for jazz and drinks. Ending the night with fried zucchini from Mels. The next week would be filled with poetry spots like Shades of Afrika, The World Stage where you’d fall in love with spicy elder VKali. Hit up Leimert Park on Sunday and enjoy lunch at Ackee Bamboo or Simply Wholesome
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out my children, partner and BLERDS all over the world! We’re in this together separately!
