We had the good fortune of connecting with Alyssa Trumic and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alyssa, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Ever since I can remeber art and creativity was something that I was intrinsically drawn to. I remember the very first time I picked up a paintbrush and mixed paint colours. I was 3 years old at my gradeschool’s kindergarten openhouse. As a child and even into adolescence I told everyone I met that I wanted to be an artist, and for some reason I defined being an artist as a painter or illustrator. As I grew I discovered that I was holding myself back by limiting what art meant to me. I discovered my desire for being creative was only intensified by pursuing other creative outlets, such as jewellery design.

When I am able to watch a concept or vision come to life I feel an overwhelming sense of self satisfaction. This feeling is only amplified when I see others enjoy something I have created. These are just a few of the reasons why I have pursued an creative career.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Growing up, when it came to my career I felt kind of lost. I wasn’t recieving much guidance on what to do with my life from home. I knew I loved painting and wanted to pursue that, but at the same time my guidnace counselers where all pushing me to go into nursing and go to university even if I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do there. I felt unsure so I decided to take a year off. During that time I enrolled in a post-secondary fine arts program. After completing this program I realized that pursuing a fine arts degree wasn’t necessarily what I wanted. I started working and travelling. I didn’t want to go to school just to go to school, especially if I had no clear goal in mind. Eventually I met my husband and we got married. Seeing me come home from working a job that was emotionally draining moved him to enourage me to sellmy paintings. But that idea just overwhelemed me with anxiety , I didn’t want to start hating the thing that brought me relief from stress and anxiety.Thats when I started watching videos on how to make jewllery. I thought ” I can do that!”. I did tons of research. I educated myself. I made prototypes and gave them to my friends and family. Eventually I started selling my peices in local markets and art shows. The response was incredible. It was the boost I needed to continue learning more and more about this new path I had just started.

I have come along way from my first pieces of jewellery. My style has evolved and changed over time. Now I work with mostly gold filled material and semi precious stones. My style is minimalist and of the earth. I love working with natural and organic shaped stones. Anything that makes me feel connected to the natural world is what inspires me and my brand. I want to create unique items that are unlike anything you would find in a retail store. I am currently also working on releasing a collection of my artwork. My art also features aspects of the natural world, botanicals, and landscapes.

A lesson I learned is that you should never limit yourself or tell yourself you can’t do something. I truly believe that anyone can be an artist. Or rather anyone can learn to paint, make, or create. All you need to do is be persistant, and keep at it. If you really want it you are going to get there. We are surronded by more information than ever before. Creators are constantly sharing their wealth of information online through blogs and videos. All you need to do is want to learn, and you can.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am in southern Ontario in a small city called Windsor. Four hours south of Toronto and right across a river from Detroit, Michigan. The beauty of this city is it’s diversity. It has some amazing restaraunts and they are all authentic mom and pop places. Which I just love. When it comes to Vietnamese my go to place is Pho Windsor their spring rolls will hook you right in. Thai Palace has the best pad thai and tom kha gai I have ever tasted and all their sauces are made in house. Of course we would also have to make a stop at Vittorio’s Slice of Italy for their nutella and marscapone pizza. This thing is life changing! Being Italian-Canadian I can get snobby about Italilan restaurants but Vittorio’s is hands down one of the best spots in town for pizza and pasta.

In the summer it’s always fun to visit the local wineries in the area. Another fanatstic place to visit is Serenity Lavender Farm Inc.

When the weather is good a geat place to stop by is Point Pelee National park, especially in the spring or fall. Since its on a major migration route, you can be sure to see many types of birds that aren’t common to our area during the month of May. In the fall thousands of monarch butterflies stop by on their way down south. The sight is spectacular and definitely not something to miss!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband is a constant source of support. He always encourages me not to give up and helps me see that my skills are worthy. It’s his faith in me that gave me the courage to pursue this career path.

I am also so grateful to two specific art teachers that I had in grade school and highschool, respectively. They saw something in me and encouraged me to pursue refining my abilites. Their encouragement and training was something I wasn’t receiving anywhere else. They gave me the courage I needed to have confidence in my abilities and refine my skill. I learned so much about traditional art from these two teachers and I still think about what they taught me to this day. They gave me the building blocks and hands on training I needed to lay the foundation of my creative career. Talking with other artists later in life I realized that most art teachers in highschool and primary school aren’t actually art teachers and don’t know much about the subject. I feel so blessed to have had these teachers that genuinely cared for and loved art. I am so grateful they took and interest in me and used me for bigger projects. Teachers truly make a difference!
