We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda Sturdy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amanda, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always loved throwing parties and making them feel extra special with a little creative flair. When I served as VP of Programming of a local non-profit for moms, I started creating balloon garlands for every event. It became my go-to way to add some fun and whimsy to a space, and soon friends and family were cheering me on to take it further. Their support and encouragement really pushed me to take the leap and turn my passion into a business. Balloons by Mandy was born out of a mix of creativity and love of (and from!) my community.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is all about transforming spaces with bold, colorful balloon installations that create an instant sense of celebration. What sets me apart is my focus on crafting more than just decorations. I aim to create memorable experiences, whether it’s a playful garland for a kid’s birthday or a striking statement piece for a business launch. I love that moment when people walk into a space and their eyes light up because it feels completely transformed. That’s what I strive for every time.

I’m still in the early stages of building Balloons by Mandy, and I know there’s so much more to learn. However, I’m excited for the challenge. Each new project teaches me something- whether it’s perfecting a technique, managing my time better, or finding creative ways to make a client’s vision come to life.

Looking back, it’s wild to think how far I’ve come. The first garland I made barely survived the first half of my daughter’s first birthday party before most of the balloons popped and the whole thing sagged. Now, I’m creating installations that can handle full-day events without a hitch. It wasn’t easy getting here. I had to learn how to price my work, market myself, and navigate the ups and downs of entrepreneurship – all while juggling life as a mom. Those early mishaps taught me resilience and the importance of embracing the learning curve.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is to trust my instincts and not be afraid to go all in on my creativity. I want the world to know that Balloons by Mandy is more than just balloon garlands – it’s about bringing joy, connection, and a touch of magic to every celebration.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love being outdoors. Either spending the day at the beach (mostly Orange County, but sometimes Hermosa or Malibu) or hiking in our beautiful mountains. Some of my favorite hikes are Stough Canyon. Griffith Park, Eaton Canyon, and Chantry Flats. For something a little slower, I love wandering through Descanso Gardens or the LA Arboretum.

When it’s time to eat I can’t resist Porto’s. I love burgers at The Morrison in Burbank. For coffee, the Ugly Mug is fantastic. I’m always down for some King Taco or a treat from Dad’s donuts.

I’m a Kings and Dodgers fan so catching a game would likely be on any itinerary I create. Maybe throw in a scenic run at the Rose Bowl for fun.

There’s nothing that I love more than live music. So whether its at the Hollywood Bowl, The Whiskey a Go Go, or the local dive featuring the neighborhood garage band, I. am. down.

And of course, because I have a kid, Disneyland and the Zoo are always a must.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to the Burbank chapter of the non-profit MAEVE, and the incredible women I worked with while serving as the VP of Programming on the executive board. It all started with me volunteering to make some decorations for a few events, and that’s when the board members really took notice. They recognized the value in my skills and encouraged me to keep going. Their belief in what I brought to the table gave me the confidence boost I needed and opened doors for my first paying gigs.

And, of course, a huge thank you to my friends and family for always supporting me.
