We had the good fortune of connecting with Amberly Lago and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amberly, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
What started out as a way for me to share my story and give hope with my book “True Grit and Grace,” ended up connecting me to an amazing community of heart-centered warriors. My intention was to share my experience of surviving a horrific motorcycle accident and overcoming 34 surgeries to save my leg and to show that the human spirit is powerful beyond measure. My hopes were to share that even though I was diagnosed with an incurable disease called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, dubbed “the suicide disease,” that there are ways to find joy and be also be resilient. By sharing our vulnerability we find our strengths and I have found other CRPS warriors that have been able to climb out of the darkest when they realize they aren’t alone in their pain. I share tips and tools on how to strengthen your resilience, build your confidence and have the life you have always imagined even when things don’t go as planned.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am a former professional dancer, fitness trainer and athlete, turned motivational speaker and mindset coach. I spent most my life on the dance floor and then the gym floor until I was hit by an SUV while riding my motorcycle home from work one day. My leg took the brunt of the accident. My femoral artery was severed and I had a one percent chance of saving my crushed leg from amputation. By the grace of God and a lot of grit doctors performed 34 surgeries to save my leg and then I was diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome which leaves me in constant chronic pain. I was told I would never be able to work again, be permanently disabled and be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life. Despite the odds I learned to walk again and my goal was to be able to work with clients again—somehow and someway. It took years of literally falling down and getting back up. I was determined to find joy again and what brings me joy is to be of service to others! I love empowering others and seeing them rise to their full potential. Through my book, coaching methods, and workshops I have curated unique tools to teach others how to tap into their superpower of resilience and persevere through any of life’s challenges. I offer hope and solutions for anyone (like me) living in chronic pain to live life to the fullest. I have been featured on NBC’s The Today Show, The Doctors, Hallmark, Good Morning Lalaland, contributed to magazines such as Shape, Fit Pregnancy, Health, and Disability Magazine and made the cover of Keynote Speakers Magazine. So it doesn’t matter how old, how young, if you don’t have a college degree, or if you feel like you don’t know how to do something—if you have passion and work hard you can do anything your heart desires!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First we would go grab a cappuccino and some avocado toast at Gasolina Cafe then head to Malibu to hike at Point Dume and soak up some sun! Next we would visit our horse Reddy and all the other ponies and goats at Malibu Valley Farms where he lives. Then a nice dinner at Nobu on the beach if and when restaurants open again! I love being at home and eating right in the backyard but if I had some fun places to visit and eat it, it’s always a blessing to be able to go to a restaurant. I think we will all have a better appreciation of eating out, being able to shop at boutiques and gathering with friends at coffee houses when we get through Covid.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have a group of ladies that are always there for me and I am there for them—we call ourselves “The God Squad.” I’m giving them the biggest shoutout for loving me when I’m hard on myself and reminding me to give myself some grace. Shoutout to them for showing up at every single one of my events, for sharing my social media posts, for hearing me and seeing me. I think we all just want to feel loved, heard and supported and belong. So if anyone needs a squad reach out to me! You are always welcome to be in the tribe!
