We had the good fortune of connecting with Theo Francocci and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Theo, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?

I believe it all happened so naturally: my love for music and movies brought me to do a course in Audio Engineering in London. There I learned the secrets of audio recording and sound design. I practiced with equipment and software and treasured suggestions and experiences of the professionals in the field. Well, I felt ready to start my own carreernted to be like them, I wanted to do better than them. I felt ready to start my own career in the film industry. I also feel blessed that I had the chance to travel to LA and study at UCLA, which is a real net of other passionate students and teachers. UCLA gave me a new impulse to pursue a creative path.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I define my career, and my success in filmmaking, as a mix of study, experience, and passion. Studying is the first step and the main factor, and I think that the hard work I did, bore its fruit.  However, studying is not enough. In my vision, hustling paves the way to success; I mean, you need motivation and persistence to succeed. Well, I experienced that there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing stories and scripts coming to life on the screen. During my years at a Recording Studio in Rome, I nourished myself with films and TV shows, studying them, exploring them, until I developed my taste. I experimented with the creative power of those who film the stories and those who atmosphere the movies through background music, sounds, and noises. Experience gave me in-depth knowledge on many aspects of production and post-production, insights that I believe are pivotal in my creative evolution. I have written original stories and made a film of my own, “Wholeheartedly,” which has gained recognition in several film festivals. (Best Indie Filmmaker award at Top Shorts – 2019, Best Drama Short award at Hollywood Just4Shorts Film and Screenplay Competition – 2020, Best Sound Design of International Short Film at the Brazil International Monthly Film Festival – 2020).

But that is not all. You need passion; that is the fire inside yourself. It makes you constantly challenge yourself, and it is the energy that comes from the fact that you believe in what you are doing. In conclusion, I could say to people who want to become film-makers or pursue any creative career that the road is steep but not impossible. Never stop believing in yourself and ignore those who tell you that you’re not enough or you will never make it. Remember that the only obstacle along the way is yourself.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some of the activities I love in LA: Having brunch at John O’Groats, go for a hike near Malibu / Point Dume, having dinner in Sawtelle, going for a walk by Santa Monica pier and jumping on the wheel for a stunning view. I would suggest a walk to Venice canals, Abbot Kinney and then eating at the Firehouse. You can’t miss a good coffee and dessert at Eataly (Century City mall) or a drink at the Wellesbourne Grab, or a vegan meal at the Green table cafe, where vegans meet Italian culture. Exploring the Grove, especially during Christmas time, is really entertaining. In Hollywood, after a hike to the sign, it’s worth visiting the Egyptian Theater and the Chinese Theater  and later having drinks at the No vacancy. Well, also Urth Cafe at Bevery Hills is a great spot for meeting friends. Going for a hike at Elysian park and Echo park is a good way to enjoy a day out. Finally, if you want to hear some good music, why don’t you stop at the Viper room for at Baltaire Restaurant?

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to mention Stellar Team Media, a company that specializes in Audio Descriptions. I knew them and started a collaboration. I like the idea of enabling blind and visually impaired individuals to understand and enjoy the media fully, and I think it will help me in my personal growth as a writer.
