We had the good fortune of connecting with Amelia Chen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amelia, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I grew up in a traditional asian family. The thing I heard the most from my parents is you have to study hard and work hard to succeed. It seems like a responsibility for me to work my fullest to satisfy my parents. It’s like my life goal and purpose, which is extremely sad. For many years, work takes precedence over everything else in my life. Work brings contentment and fulfillment to my life. But I was losing my happiness. When I finished my college and stepped into my career life. I started to realise I need to change my mindset, get rid of this workaholic habit, learn not to take work too seriously, and have a harmonious work-life balance. I began to read self help books to slowly change my habit and mind. It’s not easy to refuse jobs and work. But 2020 totally changes me. A year is full of difficutilies, tears, fear, and tragedy. What will the worst be? I realise nothing is more important than a peaceful life surrounded by the ones you love, a healthy body, and living happily. I began to slow down my work life and unplug myself. Prioritizing my health, I go to yoga class, boxing class regularly. It forms a good habit of fitness, boosts my energy and brightens my mood. I pick up my old habbit of reading, explore new places, and connect with old friends. I have never felt this peaceful, calm, and joy. A good work/life balance has numerous positive effects for our life. It can help us manage our stress, be more productive, and have a great sense of well-being. We need that balance to keep a joyful and healthy life. We have our whole life time to work. So why not slow down a bit and enjoy the moment? We have a lot more valuable things than work in our life.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a motion designer and illustrator. I have been working with all kinds of projects for clients like Google, IBM, Apple, Wall Street Journal, Walmart, Samsung, etc. I like to meet the challenge and work on different visual styles. I think my flexibility of doing various styles, the sense of humanity, and a bit of cuteness of my work set me apart from others. As a creative, the most proud thing is that I can produce pretty designs to add some colors and flavor to the world and this society. Creating beauty and bringing joy are the most meaningful things for me as an artist. It’s an easy but also not easy journey. I have been lucky to get full support from my parents. My dad had a big influence on me and made me love art since I was little. I went to art school when I was 13. There was time I wanted to give up art and quit art school. When drawing became a task and burden instead of a hobby, I slowly lost my interest and passion. I didn’t treat art seriously in high school and college. But when I studied my master’s, I began to find my passion for art again. I have been lost for many years, but I am glad I didn’t give up on it. There are many struggles I had and I am still learning. Always being creative and constantly creating new things are not easy as said. For different projects, it will be a new challenge to have. I will start over to produce different styles and come up with new ideas. It’s hard but fun at the same time. I like to explore all new things and try everything once to stay fresh and gain inspiration. I treat experience positively, no matter good or bad. The lesson I have learned is never ever give up if you love art, especially for young artists. If you don’t give up, one day you will shine and be seen by others. I am trying my best to be a very responsible designer. You can always trust me about work and I will try to make work perfectly. I want the world to know me not only my work but also my personality. I am a bright person and want to be the light for my friends, my family, and the person I love. I have many other goals and plans to work on. Photography is another passion of mine. Hope I can become a professional photographer one day and record beautiful moments for people.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If it’s my best friend’s first time to come to LA. I will plan a classic tourist route for him/her. I will get up really early with my friend to check out the Hollywood sign in the morning. Hiking to the top to breathe fresh air, grab a coffee, and have a wonderful early morning. Go riding a bike on Santa Monica and Venice beach to enjoy a sunny day. Take a long walk along Melrose Avenue and Getty Center. At night time we will go visit Griffith Observatory to enjoy the beautiful night view of LA. I really enjoyed my first time at Griffith Observatory. The breathtaking night view of the whole city is stunning.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It’s a long journey I became who I am today. The person I want to thank the most are my parents, especially my mom. She is a very smart and strong woman, my real model. She dedicated her life to raise me and gave me the best she can. She has never regretted giving up some part of her life or career. My parents are always there for me no matter what has happened and the love of my family make who I am today. I am really thankful for them and appreciate every little thing in my life. I am very lucky to have them in my life. There is also a very special friend I’d love to thank for, who makes me a better version of myself.
