We had the good fortune of connecting with Amie Barsky and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amie, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks has played a huge role in my life. Looking back, I would definitely describe myself as a “risk taker” and I am extremely glad because I can’t imagine where I would be if I hadn’t! I also think an important question for me is “why?” When I look at my younger years I see now that I chose to take risks from a very “rebellious” often confused and frustrated head space, verses now, a place of excitement, risks that are in alignment with my goals. Generally, just like gambling, the bigger the risk the bigger the payoff. Obviously, each risk has different results. My risks have varied from adventure sports like skydiving, bungee jumping and scuba diving, to leaving my “land life” and traveling around the world dancing for a prestigious cruise line. I’ve also taken risks by falling in love, trusting others, falling out of love, moving from the East coast to the West Coast, choosing divorce, choosing myself & changing careers …MANY times. Earlier I mentioned the “why” and now I’d like to share some insight on the “when.” How do you know when to take that risk, that chance to start a family, to change to a new job or career, to invite in a new relationship or seek out a new opportunity, to write that book or learn a new skill set? or ANYTHING that could potentially change your life forever? How do you know when? As an Empowerment Coach I guide others to do just this so that they can reach their goals & dreams, which means it is important that I am also walking the walk not just taking the talk. And so I ask myself and I ask my clients the following question, “if not now, then when? What’s stopping you?” Often we have to dig around to see what limiting beliefs are holding me/them from moving forward. There is one thing I can promise, you will never truly know when it will be the “perfect” time because your ego will ALWAYS try to keep you safe, that is your ego’s job! Now your soul’s job is to make sure you evolve and thrive in life. Your ego will fight to keep you safe and your soul will fight for you to thrive. Take a second and think back to a time when you waited and waited to do something and then you finally did it and you were over the moon grateful that you did and you asked yourself “what was I waiting for? or , I wished I would have done that sooner” …..my point is, so often we wait until we are so frustrated and unsatisfied that we end up feeling resentful, anxious, angry and unfulfilled with the life we are living. My invitation for you is to listen deeply to what your heart desires, start taking inspired action steps to get you there. Usually there is a beautiful blend of fear & excitement, a “holy sh*t, I’m really doing this” feeling in your stomach AND your heart & soul are shouting YES!!! That sure sounds like a perfect time to me! In truth the perfect moment is NOW- because NOW is all we are guaranteed. My latest risk and leap of faith is pretty much happening right now, I just moved from Los Angeles where I’ve lived for the past 22 years to Encinitas (about 2 hours south of LA) I have been wanting to move for the past few years. I kept complaining about my situation, but I would make excuses and reasons and therefore not take any actions to change it. Finally I asked myself how much longer am I willing to live without truly pursuing my dreams? I took an honest look at what was most important to me. My ego put up a nice fight but my gut, my heart and my soul are much stronger. I made an action plan that felt in alignment and in 30 days I found a beautiful, quiet place to call my new home. I’ll close with one of my favorite quotes is “It doesn’t take time, it takes courage” If you need support in taking that next risk so that you can have the quantum leap in love, health, career or relationships, please reach out.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a Healthy Habits & Empowerment Coach, and creator of The Shift Method. I guide working professionals who are ready to work through their blocks of anxiety and emotional overwhelm and finally live with clarity, focus and fulfillment. What’s unique about my style is that I use a combination of Neuroscience, Positive Psychology, Subconscious Reprogramming, ETrauma and Emotional Intelligence techniques to guide my clients through their blocks. I also have an extensive background in yoga & meditation. Personally, I am proud of the work I’ve put into myself to overcome depression and anxiety that stemmed from childhood traumas. I am extremely proud that I got to heal my relationship with my Mom and create a healthy & loving one before she passed away this past January. Professionally, I consider working with one on one clients a privilege. It’s exciting to witness the shifts and exponential growth, a truly humbling experience. I enjoy tailoring each session to fit their needs so that they can move from where they are, feeling stuck on unresolved issues, to dissolving road blocks and creating a road map to get them where they want to go. Another option I offer is my online program, The Shift: A Head, Heart and Body Breakthrough. I created The Shift because it was something I was looking for and couldn’t find. It’s an “all in one” program to shift your entire body inside AND out. It’s the perfect program for those who want to make that quantum leap all in one place. It’s packed with workouts, nutritions, meditations, emotional healing, understanding and getting a handle on anxiety & depression and so much more! There’s even an Ebook sharing the science and insightful information on what meditation does for your brain! The biggest and wisest investment you can ever make in life is in yourself! That is how I got to where I am today. I invested time, energy and money into healing my past trauma, understanding my anxiety and why I struggled with depression most of my life. It wasn’t always easy but it was definitely worth it. I lived most of my life feeling afraid to use my voice, I had zero confidence and low self worth and now I’m creating a life I love with a thriving coaching business where I get to guide others to finally speak up, live with courage and confidence so that they too can live a fulfilling life with joy. I look back now and see how far I’ve come and say proudly that investing in myself was worth every ounce of time, energy and money. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned along my journey is to TRUST the process and LISTEN to my heart. I tend to be an “over-thinker”- and that usually frustrates me more. There are no wrong decisions. The decision you make is perfect for wherever you are at that time, so that you learn what you have to learn through those experiences. Another big thing that helped me is staying committed and connected to my WHY, my core values and beliefs, Make this your North Star so when you feel off or stuck you can ask yourself if what you are choosing is in alignment with your “why” and your values/ beliefs. If not, then choose differently. I want you to know that you are not alone!!! For a very long time I felt I was all alone in the world, I felt no one would ever understand me or that I would be judged, so I hid my emotions, anxiety and depression. I wore a mask to try and fit in, but it turned out to be a very dark and lonely road, one that often led to suicidal thoughts. Whatever you are experiencing it’s important to know that you DO NOT have to go through it alone. Whether you connect with me for coaching and we create your personal shift together, or find another outlet, please reach out. People love helping people, you are so loved and you are so worthy of living a beautiful life, all you have to do is connect, It will be the best gift you have ever given yourself!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love Mother Nature and all things outdoors! So I’d take them to some of the beautiful hikes in the Santa Monica mountains, like Balancing Rock and Circle X Ranch. A car ride in a convertible up the PCH and stopping at Reels Inn for fresh seafood, then to El Matador, one of the most beautiful beaches, maybe some rock climbing at Point Dume too! Down to Santa Monica’s Main Street for some home made ice cream and to check out the pier, and giant swings on the beach.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
