We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy Wang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I like telling stories in a visual way. Being able to share my imaginations with other people makes me feel happy.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Aside from focusing on the visual impact of my art, I aim to make emotional connections. Especially with AI engines growing at such a rapid pace, I think it is more important to tell stories and make emotional impact on people. Being a first generation immigrant and having my life split in half between two completely different cultures. I have a unique way of understanding culture interactions, and how to respect and communicate with other ethnicities.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Other than the LA landmarks I would invite them to walk in old town Pasadena around sundown. It is when the streets quiet down and it becomes very relaxing to stroll around. I would probably take them fishing too since there are a lot of good fishing spots around LA’s beaches.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my high school English teacher, now my mentor and a great friend, Scott DoVale. He was the first one that commissioned me to draw illustrations for his book. Since most of the other illustrations I’ve done before are only based on themes or abstract concepts this collaboration made me realize how much I like about storytelling.
