We had the good fortune of connecting with Anbiya Nawfal Alfina and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anbiya Nawfal, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I first graduated from high school in 2018, I was really interested in getting involved in the creative industry. My experience when I first became chairman of the committee for a concert in high school made me realize that the event and creative industry is a big industry that cannot be underestimated and becomes a platform for artists and art connoisseurs. At that time I felt that this industry was still dominated by older people, even though young people were the biggest target market. today young people should be able to take on many roles in this industry, to deliver a concept that has higher relevance and creativity. 2 years running I started getting projects to handle a brand as an organizer or brand consultant until finally, I started building my brand called Jazzversity in 2020. Initially, it came from personal thought about Indonesia’s jazz industry condition, where in Indonesia the jazz community and musicians jazz is still not connected with each other, including myself who is a jazz player who is part of a campus jazz community. most jazz communities still tend to gather and classify within the scope of their respective cities. In the Indonesian jazz industry, there are still many gaps between musicians and industry, community and industry, and the uneven distribution of industry in every city. This eventually led to an idea and movement to connect the Indonesian jazz ecosystem through work and collaboration, especially from the jazz campus community and musicians. Finally, the idea of Jazzversity developed into a Jazz Festival which became the biggest Indonesian student jazz collaboration concert. Now, it has become a brand that has 6 business segments in it.

What should our readers know about your business?
Jazzversity is taken from 3 syllables, namely jazz, university, and diversity. Jazzversity started with concerns about jazz at universities being compared. Meanwhile, in the current era, collaboration is one of the keys to growth. Therefore, Jazzversity moves with a vision, namely as an ecosystem and platform for collaboration of Indonesian Jazz Music Students that are interconnected, in order to advance industry, cultural values, and the country’s jazz music scene.

With its values, Jazzversity has 6 segments, namely Event, Media, Label & Music Production, Education Platform, Performance, and Community. The six segments are integrated with each other and have the same goal, namely the realization of a student collaboration platform and the rise and advancement of the jazz & creative industry in Indonesia.

jazzversity is not the same as the other brand that exists in this Indonesian jazz industry, there is a youth value and collaboration that we emphasize in our brand. for example at the Jazzversity Jazz Festival. In this event, campus jazz musicians who play at the festival will not only play with their friends on their own campus. but they will play in a team with other Indonesian jazz musicians from various campuses and regions of the world. even senior jazz artists and musicians who performed here as guest stars were also accompanied and collaborated with Indonesian campus musicians during this event.

In addition, the jazzversity community has become a big dream that is being built by jazzversity. The hope is that this will become an ecosystem pool that can interconnect students, campuses, musicians, connoisseurs, communities, and stakeholders in the Indonesian jazz industry. such as our vision to interconnect an integrated ecosystem, in order to accelerate the Indonesian jazz industry through a collective movement.

Of course, in realizing this brand, you have to go through a process and a road that is not easy. one of them is to be able to unite an ecosystem with many musicians scattered in various cities and regions of the world. is a challenge for us to be able to interconnect with each other. What’s unique is that jazz music is wrapped in the essence of community and collaboration, which can be our root in uniting people in our ecosystem to be able to work and synergize together.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
2017, was the first time I visited America, precisely in Los Angeles at that time. for me, the Hollywood walk of fame is and will probably always be my favorite place. how not, I think Hollywood is a dream for everyone to be there. being in America and Los Angeles isn’t just a vacation trip, but also a milestone in living a dream. being in Hollywood, I get a lot of inspiration, especially regarding the pop – culture that is there. jazz music, fashion, and social culture, all opened the gates of creativity that just appeared in my mind at that time.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
the journey of achievement and everything that has made me today at this point, cannot be separated from the people who are part of every process that I go through.

I am very grateful to my papa and mama, for all their support and views in educating me since childhood. I still remember very well how every word and teaching from my parents changed my view a lot to be able to reach who I am today at this point. also my brother, and my family.

talk about my process in this industry, it all started in my high school days. SMA Negeri 2 Surabaya and also a concert called SMADA FIESTA. I am very grateful for every process that occurs in my high school, including the people who are part of it. because at that time it was the first time I got the perspective, opportunity, experience, and responsibility to work and explore this industry.

After that, I want to thank Serasa Creative, an Event Organizer and a creative lab that my friends and I first built after graduating from high school. Yazerlin, Alfan, and Chaca. the four of us were quite brave and full of ideas when we first decided to build Serasa Creative. In the end, Serasa Creative became our stepping stone professionally to gain experience and learn a lot in the creative industry.

I also want to thank the big family of ITS Jazz, the jazzineers. ITS Jazz became my first family in a jazz community when I first entered the campus world. which gave me a lot of understanding about the meaning of togetherness and community through music, until it eventually became the forerunner of the formation of jazzversity

and lastly, the one and only dava giustizia and pramudya agung. they are both my musical best friend. I started making music with Dava when we were in junior high school, until in high school the first time we met Pram and finally we continued to make music together. starting from rock music, funk, fusion, and jazz, it’s been more than 7 years since we have passed the journey of friendship through music. they are not just friends and musical friends, but also fellow discussions about the vision of life that we have. Even the beginning of the Jazzversity collaboration was able to reach America, it also started through my discussion with Dava, who was already studying in America and was a member of the Berklee Indo community at that time. fun fact, dava and I were on the same math olympiad team in junior high school haha.
