We had the good fortune of connecting with André Hammonds and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi André, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
My business Shop HEM was birthed through my efforts as a celebrity based fashion stylist and costume designer for commercial, television, and film. As a working fashion stylist I realized that I was in a position to offer brands the unique ability to market their businesses through influencer placements and content creation. With this in mind I thought it would be in my best interest to create a clothing brand that I was passionate about that would allow me the opportunity to build something of my own, thus Shop HEM was born!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a full time creative I works as a fashion stylist and costume designer for commercial, television, and film. My career in it’s early stages was influenced by my studies in fashion merchandising which lead me to moving to Los Angeles, CA. During my time here I was introduced to styling on a professional level which had lead to multiple television appearances and publications of my work. I have hosted and curated many fashion based events and brand activations. Through my work as a costume designer I get to create characters through wardrobe and which is something I love to do. My career, though very fulfilling, has not been easy and certainly had it’s fair share of obstacles. Life in general is not all about the wins, but more so how we overcome those trying times. I think the greatest lesson I have learned is that everything matters! I try to keep this in mind as I navigate through my journey. My ultimate hope is that I inspire those around me to keep going.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Life is meant to be lived, and generally speaking I believe in letting things happen organically. LA is filled with so many hidden gems. I think the perfect trip would definitely include some time at the beach. Personally I spend a lot of time in Downtown in the fashion district which houses lots of vendors and other hidden treasures. For nightlife and hats a trip LA without heading over to the iconic Hollywood area. Lastly I’d be sure to go by some of my favorite eateries and dive bars!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Throughout my career I have been mentored by many industry professionals. These many individuals have enriched my life on personal and professional levels. Each of them have fostered a space of inclusion & education that has allowed me to elevate my career. I would be remised if I didn’t acknowledge how the care & concern from my many life teachers help f to enhance my overall life! Thanks to each and everyone of you!
