We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrea Fenise and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrea, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
One of my favorite quotes actually by a friend of mine is “Be dangerous. It’s careful out there!” It sets the tone and theme of my life thus far. I am definitely one that has adopted the philosophy of “life is short, take the risk. I studied biochemistry then went on to pursue my doctorate in pharmacy. I gambled on myself for the first time ever by deciding to quit pharmacy school. I’ve learned since then that taking a risk on myself is well worth it. I truly believe that the role of taking risks has led me on the most fulfilling path of my life. That path is choosing personal fulfillment and “just trying” is the best thing I could ever do for myself.
It seems that every year I take a new risk in hopes of elevating myself professionally. The latest is buying my first property that has emotional ties. I purchased my great grandmother’s house in a disinvested and redlined neighborhood. Not only have I learned so much about social justice, real estate, and construction but I have also realized that investing in the lives of my future legacies. The risks are always worth it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I wake up every day and create using my hands and my heart. I am so proud to say that my work as a creative serves my community and also heals others. My wellness brand In Search of Our Garden is helping to redefine modern living for women of color and also root us back into the traditions of the women before us and their ways. Those ways give life and a new meaning to what it means to live creatively and well. It makes me excited every single day.
I have learned many lessons along the way. The most important one is that the world is waiting on you to share yourself authentically. Everyone has a gift that is meant to make room for you. Share it!
I want the world to know that I am magical. And, I am proud and honored to live my work every day. In Search of Our Garden has a vision and a mission to help restore the magic that lies within all of us through wellness, lifestyle, and natural beauty.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Memphis is a culturally rich city. I would definitely give them an elevated southern and soulful experience. We would for sure stay at The Memphian Hotel. It is a gorgeous boutique hotel in the heart of Midtown. I would drop their bags there first, grab a cocktail at The Complicated Pilgrim.
Next, I would schedule a tour with A Tour of Possibilities. It is one of the best guided tours in the city that tells the story of Black Memphis so well. BBQ, we must eat some good BBQ. Cozy Corner of course is the place I’d take them. If you go anywhere else you really are cheating yourself.
Beale Street is for sure a Memphis experience.
I am a nature lover and Memphis has some beautiful natural treasures that are often overlooked. Shelby Farms has so much to offer. I would take them there to experience the trails, ziplining, canoeing, bike riding and more.
Last but definitely not least, I would give them a curated art and culture tour. Memphis has a really unique creative community. I would give them private tours of some of my artist friend’s studios as well as museum tours and live music experiences.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to give a Shoutout to my community–my social media followers. I shared my story of rebuilding my great grandmother’s home on my social media platform in hopes of garnering community and financial support. They showed up and out. I raised over $8,000 in 30 days. That was amazing. It showed me how supportive and invested they are in me, my dreams, and my career. That means so much.
