We had the good fortune of connecting with Angel Vu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Angel, what inspires you?
I am inspired by creation — specifically when people make things with their hands. I have a huge desire to create when I see others doing so. They are usually things like making pasta or bread from scratch, playing an instrument, shooting in black and white film, throwing pottery, watercolor painting & things of that nature.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Honestly, my favorite part about my business (Blow Me Candle Co.) is the fact that I never intended for it to be a “real” business. I learned how to make candles as a hobby. Though I’ve always been the ‘maker-type,’ prior to candles, my goal was to grow as a graphic designer with concentration in brand development. I figured branding my little candle gig would be tons of fun & great to add to my portfolio as well. When I told my partner the business name, he immediately got it trademarked. At the time, I thought he was doing the most but now I am really appreciative that he did.

I’ve learned a lot since starting Blow Me in August of 2020. Making candles & owning a business requires a lot of trial and error. Sometimes you do things that don’t turn out the way you thought it would. This was really hard for me to accept. I am still working on it to this day but the perfectionist in me wants everything to turn out perfect from the start. Obviously, that’s hardly the case. I am learning to accept & rather enjoy the journey to wherever it is I am going. It’s all part of the ride.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m actually new(ish) to LA — Santa Monica to be exact. There’s so much I personally have not explored but if I had a friend for a week we would definitely eat Kazu-Nori at least twice. I’m obsessed with that place. We’d definitely go to Elephante for the gorgeous rooftop & views. We’d walk to the beach from my shop & get fruit or hotdogs from the cart vendors. We’d also get Cha Cha Chicken before or after the beach. Get the fresh watermelon juice — trust me.

To be completely honest we’d end up drunk 2-3 times at a bottomless mimosa brunch, Bungalow, Waterfront, Good Time’s At Davey Waynes in Hollywood or even on a private wine tour in Malibu. Call me basic if you’d like. I’m here for a good time, not a long time.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My partner of 6ish years (we’re losing count), Louis. We’ve watched each other grow tremendously. Lord knows I am not the same girl he picked up years back. I was broken & frail but he’s definitely helped me grow into a much stronger & more confident woman. Sappy personal stuff aside, he’s always believed in me — more than I ever have. He always said Blow Me would be larger than I thought & he was right. When I first started the business, he got the trademark done. At the time, I was like, “you’re doing a lot.” Fast forward to now, I am very thankful he did. So here’s to you, babe. Thank you for always believing in me.
