Meet Angela Sheik | Artist / Composer / Music Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Angela Sheik and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angela, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
What a great question! I think I’ve boiled this giant down into 4 little bites. My dream legacy would be…
1. that I took creative risks and shared in vulnerability,
2. that I used my platform to say what others, for one reason or another, were unable to say themselves,
3. that I loved and invested in community, helping to strengthen it wherever I happened to live, and
4. that I shared generously; offering opportunity and abundance to the people around me.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a classically trained vocalist, pianist, and flutist who loves loop pedals, heavy drum beats, and pop-influenced film score. I’m influenced by Labrinth (HBO’S Euporia score), Son Lux (Everything Everywhere All At Once score) and the artist Bjork. My career as a performer has allowed me to tour the US and Europe playing festivals and famous music venues as well as back yards and living rooms. I love how it gave me a peek into so many various communities and cultures. As a composer, I’ve created music for big brands like match.com, ADIDAS, and Toyota using my flute, voice, toys, and electronic production. Now I’m leaning into scoring for film and TV as well. This has definitely not been an easy road, but I continue to learn to lean into my own weird voice and off-kilter creative ways. I’m trusting that the right work, connections, and projects will come if I’m open and authentic. For a long time I was embarrassed about being very “type A” organized and planned out, but now I see how it helps me to be a better leader and team member. In the pop world I was occasionally criticized for being classically trained, how that affected my sound, but I see how it serves me immensely as a composer. Bottom line: be yourself and lean into your strengths. Create, create, create and the right work, opportunities, and connections will come.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
WEST SIDE! Sweet Valentine Bakery in Carson for peach cobbler or amazing sticky buns that you never knew you needed.
Sachi.LA in Culver for coffee and maybe a super cool plant.
Take an inspiring book binding, cyanotype, or ring-making class at the Craft Contemporary Museum in mid city.
Ride the Expo line to Santa Monica and walk on the cliffs overlooking the ocean and the pier. Go public transit LA!
Take same Expo line all the way downtown. Visit The Broad Museum or Grand Central Market. Ride the Angels Flight rail back up the steps. Grab a rooftop cocktail at The Perch at sunset.
Dinner – Mizlala in West Adams or my favorite west side hole-in-the-wall, Quebobs.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
To Merideth Hite Estevez for leading an amazing, free, creative recovery group online (and writing a book to tell about it!).
To Thomas Golubic for being the first person to really “see” me in LA and offer an opportunity to work together.
To Hunter George for being a friend and advisor as I learned the west coast ropes.
To Johnny Anderson and Jeff Gray for hosting Hunnypot, spotlighting live indie music, and helping to build community on the west side for many years.
To Gayle Dillman for founding Ladybug Music Festival, the largest women-fronted music festival IN THE WORLD.
