We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Mathews and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daniel, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
The music industry is overly saturated and despite what you have heard there is almost no money in this industry. I mean there is, but far into the game. I guess it’s just like everything, there is a grind, but this one takes, to me, so much more time. If you do decide to start a band, have fun, but also take it serious if you want to make it. We as a band have always had fun and been serious, but never took it to the step that we are now. So if you want to do this, push, push and push because even if it’s not a huge return, you will eventually see some sort of success.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We got here by just wanting to play music. It’s technically easy to get into because ANYONE CAN BE IN A BAND, you just have to DO IT! It’s not hard to get where we are, it just takes time. Lessons I/we’ve learned along the way? Probably just be smarter with marketing yourself. You have to put yourself out there…never think that you can’t get one a certain page, website or YouTube channel until you try. I just want people to know that we are a band about just having a good time. We are just some friends playing something that we created from nothing and putting it out into the world. Like we’ve always said, start a band with your friends and you’ll have a great time!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well if it’s in our area, there really isn’t much to do. If my band had a show I would ask if they’d want to go, because hey they might not like the music. Gotta be polite. If they are my best friend we probably just stay at home, plays games and eat some fast food. If they made me leave the house, we’d probably go to Victoria Gardens, walk around and then end that by getting Vince’s Spaghetti for dinner. One place that I would take them to eat would be Savage Ramen if we had to stay close, but if we could go far for food we’d go to Tatsu Ramen in LA. Other than that, I don’t really know because I’m a homebody. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh there are a bunch of people that deserve recognition. We wouldn’t be anywhere today with these people or platforms. So this list includes, but is not limited to (because I know I will forget someone): Reclaim, Mathcore Index, Marked;Life, Marrow, Traditions, Steaksauce Mustache, Stay Wild, Common War, Ape Unit, Crude Dudes, Bridgetown D.I.Y., Burgerwolf, The Den, The Fly Honey Warehouse, Rita, Extinction Burst, Local Man Records, Dead Air Studios, Champion Heart Media, Emo Cow Records, No Time Records, The Fü Haus (R.I.P.), C47, Programme Skate & Sound, Call Me Armageddon, Palomino Records, any person that has printed us merch, any one that has put us on a show and most importantly The Chariot because without them we would’ve never formed.
