We had the good fortune of connecting with De’aja Plummer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi De’aja, what makes you happy? Why?
What makes me happy, is working! Not many can say that about work, but I enjoy work. I own a podcast and I absolutely love to work on it each and every chance I get. It’s almost like a feeling of euphoria when I am recording. The feeling of working on something that belongs to me, something that I have started and created by myself gives me a great feeling of accomplishment. Its a humbling and amazing feeling. Nothing makes me happier than being in my studio and putting those headphones on and recording episodes for my podcast. When it’s something you love, it doesn’t even feel like work. It also brings me happiness knowing that I am giving many people of color a chance to get their voices heard and that is something that I will continue to do!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I created a podcast titled “Let Me Speak,” dedicated to allowing black hip hop artists to voice their thoughts and opinions on important issues in the world that affect the black communities. I created this podcast to show that despite what the media tries to display, black men in hiphop are actually very intelligent and that they’re knowledgeable in things other than just jewelry, killing or robbing people, money and degrading women like how society wants everyone to think of black men in the rap game. My ultimate goal is to defy the stereotype placed on black men in hiphop and to allow these black men’s voices to be heard. I’m most proud of the fact that I have actually started this podcast. I created and designed my own studio to go along with it. This is something I have dreamt about and to make it actually come true is an amazing feeling. It definitely was not easy but nothIng rewarding in life is. I have learned to keep going. Any time I came across any bumps in the road I told my self, never dwell on the negative and don’t stop. That mentality has brought me a long way. It helps me not to get discouraged.
