We had the good fortune of connecting with Anje Collins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anje, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have been a publicist in the entertainment industry for 35 years and per my Instagram page, I’ve always shared my shoes with my audience. I decided to leave the world of PR in 2018 and retire, but I got bored and decided it was time to launch my shoe line. So, when I finally finished everything, the pandemic hit, and I told myself that it wasn’t going to stop me. I launched Coco and Blue Collective in December 2020. I wanted to create a luxury shoe line for women and men that was exclusive to them.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
For more than 35 years, I have successfully used my master’s degree in public relations to amplify and publicize an extensive list of celebrity clientele. Now, I’m using my decades of experience to break barriers in the fashion industry with my new luxury shoe brand, Coco & Blue Collective.
Being a publicist is the most unappreciated job and I made a decision to pivot from my high-profile position in public relations to turn my love for shoes into a successful business.
Before the pandemic, I fell and broke my ankle. This gave me time to think about what I really wanted to do. One was to focus on my organization Women In PR, and two just sit down and do me for once.
I used my unexpected downtime to ultimately launch my shoe brand and online boutique, Coco & Blue Collective.
The move proved to be successful, as my ready-to-wear capsule line, which was launched right before Christmas, sold out in less than a month!
It was very important that my first collection honored the special women in my life. I named my inventory after women who are true friends and exceptional businesswomen who have a grown a sexy edge
I launched a second line, men’s dapper footwear, on February 4. I wanted to celebrate the great men that continue to have a huge impact on my life and others.
With the success of my luxury line, I was inspired to create a collection that provided the same luxury feel but without its weighing costs. That’s when I launched my ready-to-wear collection, Coco Blue Shoes.
We offer a vast selection of designer-inspired shoes ranging from sexy heels to cozy slides, and of course stunning accessories like colorful fedoras and chic handbags.
Much like my other collections, I added a personal touch by naming each item after a city or country that I’ve been to or lived in.
While many may consider it a risk to start a business during a pandemic, I was willing to roll the dice and bet on myself to win. It was simple, I know that everyone can’t afford expensive shoes, but that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve the quality. I want every person that wears my brand to look and feel the luxury they desire.
It is my plan to continue to create gorgeous shoe capsules.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My best friend is in town and we’re currently in a pandemic, I live in DTLA so there are a lot of unique things to do down here, like the farmers market on 5th or grand central market to eat good food and drink wine.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout to all of the women in my organization, Women In PR. Women In PR is an organization that I co-founded in 2011.
Women In PR (WIPR) is a leading digital resource for the next generation of public relations professionals. The organization empowers women to reach their full potential by promoting their professional growth and inspiring them to share their successes in the rapidly changing world of public relations. Educating the new world of work, WIPR delivers workshops, resources, mentoring, and business consulting solutions.
These women have been the biggest support system for me and others and we are 5,000 + members strong.
