We had the good fortune of connecting with anthony lazarus and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi anthony, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Working as a product manager in corporate America, I’ve always been fascinated with product development and have trained myself to notice gaps in the market. I saw a boom in the men’s grooming category and quickly noticed a market gap catering to the groin area. A few of my close friends from Hermosa Beach worked in the beauty space, so we teamed up to take on this white space and normalize below-the-belt hygiene for men with premium formulas, cheeky humor, and bold branding. Our first product, Happy Nuts Comfort Cream Ball Deodorant, has become the #1 deodorant on Amazon during the Christmas season for a few years. We’ve now expanded to a full line of products tackling taboo body issues under two brands, empowering men and women to have superior hygiene and healthier self-esteem. Now, our brands have grown some incredible roots with eight full-time employees, an office, and millions of customers worldwide.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
After college, I worked as a product manager, developing new products at a furniture manufacturer. I’ll tell you that this industry is outdated, and I saw a lot of similarities after starting a men’s grooming brand. Most men had outdated beliefs that they shouldn’t take care of their bodies and used basic products from big-name brands that had harsh chemicals. Happy Nuts products solved these issues by normalizing groin and body care with dedicated tools and natural formations. I’m excited to see a cultural shift in men and their hygiene routine now that we’ve educated the market. Our marketing is bold, cheeky, yet relatable, and it sets us apart from the competition by empowering men to speak freely about their grooming routines, which is a big step in the right direction. We’ve devised unconventional marketing tactics to break through the noise, but the best way to stand out from the competition is to prioritize your customers. If you have true initiative to put customers first, they will remember that. We’ve trained our team to have a customer-obsessed culture and achieve product-market fit, which has helped us significantly grow. Our raving reviews speak for themselves, but the journey to product-market fit is full of challenges.
One example of this was when I developed our premium ball trimmer called The Ballber Pro, and I wanted to understand how we add more value to our customers who bought the original model that had some areas for improvement. These questions can sometimes be cliche, but taking the time to contemplate and uncover real answers can lead to surprisingly strong outcomes. Customers now rave about our digital display, robust replacement head, travel lock feature, quick charging dock, and premium aesthetics. Put your customers first, and that value will naturally turn into sales.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The answer is quite simple. It all starts with grabbing beach chairs, surfboards, and games for a beach day. The best surf spots near me are in Malibu or Huntington Beach, but I usually head to Manhattan Beach since it’s close to my house. End the day with beers at a local brewery and tacos at a hole-in-a-wall taco shop to fill up before going to the bars at night.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Throughout my career, I’ve had several incredible mentors who helped and inspired me, along with books, courses, and content. Above all, the most significant transformation came from attending a Tony Robbins event with one of my best friends, Dayne Kamela. It was an incredible experience and transformed my mindset, psychology, and approach to business, so I’m giving a big shoutout to Tony Robbins.
