We had the good fortune of connecting with Anthony Purcella and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anthony, how do you think about risk?
My whole career and life started with me taking a risk. I started doing photography back in 2017 and an opportunity appeared to me to take photos for a band on Warped Tour. They already had a photographer at the time but they ended up not being able to do the tour the day before leaving. When I saw that they weren’t able to do the tour, i contacted a friend who was in the band that I would be willing to do whatever I had to join them on tour. Half of my bunk on the bus was paid for and I had to pay for the remaining half. It was the exact amount of money I had in my bank account. I agreed. Then I called my serving job at the time that i would be gone for 2-3 months and left the next day. And now I currently still tour with this band while they grow and now have many more outlets with my craft.

I do understand though that I happened to be in a place where I could take this risk and spend all my money to start touring with a band that I was already friends with. But the money and being friends is not what solidified my position. My hard-work and creative vision did.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a digital + film photographer who specializes in live music, portraits, and documentation. I tour with bands and capture their life on tour, on and off stage, in the form of photos and video. When I am home from tour, I have a studio in Downtown Los Angeles where I practice my portraiture and creative ideas. I shoot most of my work on film or use alternative methods to stray from the more digital side of photo and video. I have recently begun developing and scanning all my own film so that I can be fully involved in my own process. My future goal is start developing and scanning for other people and to eventually open up my own film lab.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would not be able to do anything if it wasn’t for my grandpa. He always made sure I was secure and did everything he could to give me a roof over my head. His generosity and love is what gave me the security to take risks and pursue my dreams.
