We had the good fortune of connecting with Antoine Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Antoine, how do you think about risk?
I think risks makes us feel alive. There are safe ways to live life. There’s nothing wrong with that, but one can be missing out on happiness and success on the other side of safe, called risks. I few years ago, in 2016, I left the marketing industry to focus on my photography business. It was very scary and I wasn’t sure if I was making the right decision. Hindsight 20/20, it was a pivotal step, towards being happy and spending more time doing what I love. There is no price on that. It’s paramount to many facets of your life. I am currently shooting for a luxury e-commerce brand and shooting my projects and I feel so happy to arrive at this point in my life.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is capturing and documenting a specific moment in time. A capsule for the client to remember forever in their minds and heart. I think people appreciate enjoying their moment and knowing someone with a track record of getting the job done, is there seeing what they are not able to see, from the lens’ perspective. I got where I am today with humility and hard work. It’s not easy. It’s a love for what you do. I’ve sacrificed many party nights and social gatherings, to put in the work and be there to capture other people’s moments. You have to be someone people would like to work with and you have to show and prove. People want to see the work. I want people to know that I am an artist that paints with his camera. Hopefully, when people view my art, it strikes a chord in their mind, heart & spirit.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was not from the area, I would start off in NJ, visiting parts of Bergen, Passaic and Hudson Counties. These counties and their local businesses and people will really tell the story of Jersey living. We are 20 minutes from NYC on a good day and have access to expand the sights into New York City. Restaurants, Museums, Clubs, lounges, views and the culture are what makes this area one of the best in the nation. At this point in life, small gatherings with great friends, regardless of where you are, is the best way to enjoy NJ/NYC. Every person you have in your circle brings something to the table and contribute to the experience.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
One of the people that deserves recognition in my story, is a good friend of mine, Tommy. We have done online radio together and when he transitioned to creating a mobile DJ/Party Event business, he asked me to join him for packages that would offer photography. He saw that I was reliable and serious about the craft. That decision in 2012, lead to where I am at today. I appreciate his belief in my talent and ability to make people happy.
