We had the good fortune of connecting with Archita Mandal and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Archita, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
To achieve one’s goal, passion is necessary but not sufficient; grit and purpose are what fuel the engine of passion. This is the most important lesson that my career has taught me. When I had a corporate leadership role as my day job, and I had just finished a year of executive education at Stanford University, I was motivated to write my latest released short fiction “The Nair House”. This was my passion. But I had two children to raise — one just a toddler –and a corporate job to keep. I realized then that if I had to see my passion become a reality, I would need a lot of grit and determination to be able to direct and produce the film. My purpose was not just to make a film: I wanted to tell a story that mattered to me, the South Asian community and finally create good art. To be able to reach my goal of taking this story to my audience, I had to keep my sense of purpose front and center; so I kept at it until it became available on Amazon Prime. This journey of indie filmmaking passion needed plenty of grit, perseverance and a sense of purpose.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am currently building a startup in media and technology space. The company is in stealth. Alongside, I write screenplay whenever I find the time. I call it art therapy these days. It also enables me to further build the stories that preexisted long before I came up with the business idea itself. Filmmaking per say has taken a backseat but what I am developing here (business) is going to add some value to the filmmaking community itself. Hence, it gives me great satisfaction already knowing that I am developing something which will add value if done right. I got to where I am today by mostly taking risks and stepping out of my comfort zone. It was not easy. It still is not easy. I do it, so that I never have to look back in regret in life for having the idea and opportunity yet not having the grit to realize it. I also want to be a good role model to my two daughters. I do want to set an example very strongly, that it is possible to pursue lofty goals yet raise a family at the same time. I want to not only create good art (by way of filmmaking) but also create a marketplace for the filmmakers (non-fiction in this case) so that it addresses some of their pain points. This goal does set me apart in many ways as I am at the cross section of art, technology, content and business.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in San Francisco; Bay Area and I would totally take my friend to many different beautiful hiking trails Bay Area has. I would tour Stanford University which is a cool place to check out and eat at any one of the great choices of eateries in Palo Alto. Nola is one of my favorite restaurants. I would also tour Legion of Honor, an awesome fine arts museum, as well as the Fisherman Wharf in San Francisco. It is a touristic spot with lots of options for entertainment and eateries. I would also take my friend to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. A must-see! Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There is a group of people, consisting of friends and aquaintances, that have been very supportive in my filmmaking journey by way of volunteering many hours on my projects. Without this support, it would have been hard to pull of things the way I did when I first started out making films. Then came along another group of people who are now working for my startup in some capacity or the other. This too is great support and gives me a good headstart in the journey. The consistent support of my spouse is what enables me to dream big and achieve the goals. Very grateful for them all to have encouraged and supported me through out.
