We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Brabham and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The idea came to me during a time when I was unemployed, after quitting my corporate job in advertising, for the second time within a year. I had no idea that I was going to start a business, I just wanted to reconnect and tap into things that I enjoyed. MĀKTUB Studio became a way for me to connect the things that brought me the most peace, starting with candles and music. I love candles and I love music, and there’s something about the vibe it creates when they’re both together. I didn’t see anything else like it that existed, so I decided to create it myself and share it with the world. I had no idea what I was doing or getting myself into when I started, however, I was very determined to see everything through. So I researched and planned as much as I could, while I was saving money to start the business. Once I saved enough money to get started, I dove in headfirst, testing waxes and fragrances until I had a formula that worked right for the brand I envisioned. Once the product was to par, I was ready to go-to-market.
What should our readers know about your business?
MAKTUB candles are a collective of luxury hand-poured scented candles all inspired by songs and lyrics. Our candles feature all-natural coconut-soy wax, wooden wicks, and a keepsake tin. Each candle purchase comes with a complimentary matchbox + curated music playlist for each candle collection. If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my favorite things about living in California is being close to the ocean. I’m a Cancer/water sign so I naturally gravitate to water, so I often enjoy spending my free time at the beach. So I would have to start with a day trip to Catalina Island. Though it’s a short distance from LA, it’s one of my favorite places to escape because it feels like you’re out of the country. I’d end the day at one of my favorite restaurants, Post + Beam at Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, for some good food, music + drinks. It’s one of my favorite Black-owned restaurants in LA.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout would have to be, The Alchemist. It’s one of my all-time favorite books and where I got the name MAKTUB from. MAKTUB, is an Arabic word meaning “it is written”. In the book, it’s used to mean your life is written and destined for you. I chose to create a connection between that meaning and my love and appreciation of music and their lyrics that have become apart of my life’s journey. Not only did it inspire the name of my brand, but since first reading the book in 2012, it’s inspired me to follow my dreams and go after everything I want in life. Ultimately, it’s one of the main reasons I had the courage to take a leap of faith and move from CT to Los Angeles 6 years ago.
