We had the good fortune of connecting with Irene Diaz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Irene, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Writing songs, singing is just me, it’s who I am. I feel most alive when I do it, when I write and play. I can’t imagine myself not creating songs. So at 23 I decided to pursue it professionally and haven’t looked back.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I write love songs. I’ve been working at it professionally since 2010. I write mostly on guitar and piano but have recently been writing more using Ableton LIVE. My first release was in 2013, my EP titled I Love You Madly. Since then I’ve toured the country playing in places like Austin Texas, New York City, Tennessee, Portland Oregon and much more. I’ve also been fortunate to play in places like Japan and Spain. It’s been a fun experience meeting so many wonderful people, listeners and promoters alike. My biggest hit has been Crazy Love, with over 1 million listens on Spotify. In 2017 I started working on my first full length album in Mexico City with Grammy nominated producers/ brothers Alejandro and Demian Jimenez. From going back and forth from Los Angeles to Mexico City I’ve had my hands full wrapping this album up. The album is titled Lovers and Friends and features songs I’ve written all throughout my 20’s based off of personal relationships and experiences. I really think it’s a coming of age album. I’m excited for what’s to come after this release. Hopefully by this time I’ll be able to go back to touring the country and the world :). Much love.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It would be a very basic itinerary I live in Los Angeles We’d probably have breakfast at my house most days with Pan Dulce from El Aguila in El Sereno, but maybe one day at Nick’s Cafe in China Town, and one day breakfast burritos at Hi-Life in South Pasadena. We’d eat lunch at Fiore’s Market in South Pasadena some days, and other days at The Heights in Lincoln Heights. Most likely eat in Little Tokyo as well, everything is delicious there. We’d hang out at my place, go for walks around the neighborhood, go for hikes in Eaton Canyon or Debs Park, Ascot Hills. We’d take a drive to Santa Barbara cuz the coast is beautiful. We might even go out to Joshua Tree one of those days. We’d have dinner at the Heights again because they have the best Sangria. Dinner would probably be cooked most days at my place. We’d then spend some time at my friend Seung’s house because he has a lot of instruments, a lot of drums and we’d play afro beat rhythms. So pretty basic but fun and chill.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shout out is to my wife Carolyn Cardoza. We’ve been working side by side, touring, performing together for the past 8 years. I couldn’t be doing this without her. She is my Crazy Love.
