We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Capps and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I had been in the fashion tech and styling space my entire career. I’ve worked on set, styled individuals on the side and helped build styling teams at two companies. I learned a lot from each experience but always felt from the customer side and on the business side something was missing. I loved the experience working 1:1 in a client’s home but felt like that was a hard business to scale. I also saw how a lot of fashion companies or retailers were more focused selling stuff rather than focused on helping people look and feel good and not feel so frustrated w/ their closets or getting ready. In fact, they often are the impotence for people being unhappy with their closets. Ultimately, I did not have the business model flushed out when I began but I knew if I put people first and help turn their confidence around with their look I could figure out the logistics later.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
AC.Styles is a wardrobe styling consulting agency and image coaching practice. We focus on putting our clients first and helping them find a look and wardrobe that looks just as a great as it is functional. We believe that by loving 95-100% of your closet you will reduce carbon footprint of fast fashion and will reduce stress or headaches when getting ready. We help bring our client’s personalities out through their wardrobe and build their confidence through having an external appearance they feel great in.
I am most proud and excited by the impact we’ve been able to make on our clients lives. I feel so fortunate to receive comments like, “you don’t know what this experience has done for me”, “I’m forever grateful knowing what styles work for my body shape, how to match things, etc”, “I underestimated how much of a difference this would make for my life” etc.
We work with clients 1:1 virtually, in-person or through our group coaching program. Getting to this point was not easy but it all starts with action. I’m so glad that I didn’t let not knowing the details of the business model stop me from getting started. It’s amazing what you can accomplish your first year in business!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would start by grabbing a Spanish latte and quiche at Urth Cafe. Then we would stroll Rodeo drive if they’ve never been to likely mostly window shop and sightsee. Next, we would detox at my favorite Korean Spa, Wi Spa, in Koreatown for a few hours before we head to watch the sunset at Manhattan beach and eat at a local spot for dinner.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My team, I quickly realized to deliver on an amazing experience I could not do this alone. Not to mention all of the other details that correlate with being a business owner. We currently are a small but mighty team that continues to put the customer first and are always looking for new ways to innovate.
Secondly, my partner. It’s been a year and a half in and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without his full support and also the countless days/nights of me staying up late or wanting to chat through strategy when the last thing he wants to do is go to bed. I’m forever grateful.
Also, the book Millionaire Messenger by Brendan Burchard. Simple but profound influential book that has forever changed my outlook on entrepreneurship. We all have a unique story, experience and gifts and all can become successful by sharing and using them our advantage.
