Meet Ashley Glass

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Glass and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting The Hood Hippies was simple: to inspire and hold space for artists and creatives to create unique and revolutionary work, as well as provide access to art education, mentorship and resources to underserved communities who have been historically excluded.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Over the years, I’ve created a distinct style for my artwork, but never had the language to describe it. A while ago, I discovered that language and found a new sense of self and understanding. I found that many before me have been creating in the same vein and coined it AFRO SURREALISM. After doing some research, I felt seen and understood in a way I never had before.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
It’s starting to warm up in the city, so we’d definitely explore some new hiking trails, check out the butterfly exhibit at the natural history museum, and spend as much time at the beach as possible!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to Nina Simone, Eartha Kitt, Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, Assata Shakur, and countless other phenomenal Black artists and thought leaders who have paved the way for me to chase my dreams. They inspire me on my best days, and motivate me to keep going on my worst.
