We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Michelle Simpson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley Michelle, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
I hope to be a director by the end of my career. Being a show runner is often times someone’s ultimate goal and while it would be fun to try it at some point, being a Director is a definite ultimate goal for myself and work directly with other artists on projects.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m pretty proud of my linework and the way I colour my art, though I’m always looking to improve! Being able to be recognized for expressive illustrations and telling compelling stories through my storyboards has always reminded me that I am in the right profession, despite ups and downs. I was pushed early on by professors to keep challenging myself and try new things, which has certainly helped me in the long run with my career. I still have slip ups but getting back up on my feet and continuing to draw and storyboard despite those difficulties really makes looking back at my progress and being proud of how far I’ve come.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are still a bunch of galleries I would LOVE to take them to in LA! Whale watching has been another activity I’ve tried over the years here, and I enjoy taking friends with me when I can, and kayaking has been another water activity I’ve learned to enjoy. Oh, and the trains! I love traveling by train, I would most definitely have them ride with me to a destination and take a few days off to just relax. Doesn’t have to be anywhere fancy either! Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
One of my best friends, Maripier! We met in our second year of Art college while setting up a display for our life drawing teacher. She loves Halloween, I love Christmas. I don’t think I would be as far as I am without her support and encouragement. She always made herself available for chats and I would do absolutely anything for her in return.
