We had the good fortune of connecting with Aubrey Kim and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aubrey, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
As an artist, the key to success is undoubtedly self-confidence. It is crucial to create artwork based on your own beliefs rather than imitating others to be someone else. It is essential to clearly know what you want to express through your art and consistently pursue it over a long period. If you do so, your work will naturally connect with a wide audience.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I take pride in not strenuously trying to follow trends. While understanding trends is important as an artist, I find it more crucial to follow my own voice, which is why I invest most of my time exploring myself. This inclination is evident in my works, as I enjoy studying various fields and discovering what resonates with me, ultimately becoming a “generalist artist” capable of engaging in multiple art forms. Thanks to this characteristic, I have become someone who can easily assist others in diverse situations, and I take pride in that.

Certainly, this journey required a lot of learning, and finding resources for it was quite challenging. Moreover, starting something new can be daunting, but I always remind myself that everything takes time, helping me manage my expectations. Learning to enjoy the process and documenting my personal growth day by day has been immensely helpful.

While I hope for commercial success for my brand, I also aspire for my audience to be captivated by the stories my artworks tell. Furthermore, I wish for viewers to reflect on what resonated with them and embark on their own journeys through my creations.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I currently live not too far from Los Angeles, in the vibrant city of San Francisco. I have a deep appreciation for the diverse attractions that San Francisco has to offer. For first-time visitors, iconic sights like the Golden Gate Bridge and the impressive art collection at the Legion of Honor museum are must-see destinations. Personally, I have a fondness for Pier 39, where you can savor delicious clam chowder while taking in picturesque views of the sea. San Francisco, being a popular backdrop for many movies, provides the opportunity to explore film locations and capture memorable photos. Did you know that Musée Mécanique, a museum showcasing 20th-century penny arcade games and artifacts, was featured in “The Princess Diaries”? It’s these delightful and unexpected discoveries that contribute to the joy of living in San Francisco.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The people who have shaped me into the person I am today include not only myself but also my family, friends, and mentors. My family, who always make an effort to support me wholeheartedly even in difficult situations, inspire me to work even harder. They encourage me to explore what I love, and thanks to their support, I am able to engage in various artistic fields today. Friends and mentors who share the same concerns and passion willingly shared their experiences with me, guiding me towards a better direction. Exchanging our creations and ideas has not only deepened my understanding of art but also strengthened the bond of camaraderie among artistic friends.
