We had the good fortune of connecting with B Daht and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi B, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success/the success of my brand is my faith ion God, & transparency with my audience.
First off, God gets all the Glory. For without Him, I am nothing. We have all been given a “certain set of skills” from God and it is up to Us to use them for the Glory of His Kingdom; my skill is To Entertain.
From the moment I started in radio, which was just a more professional extension of my entertaining, I knew transparency with my audience was key. In that 17 year journey, the audience grew with B Daht. The audience witnessed B Daht meet his wife in college, have a son, graduate college, have a daughter, get married, make it to national television, tour the country slanging jokes, to eventually gambling on myself and leaving Radio. The people know me. The people trust me. The people enjoy celebrating my achievements because they are Our achievements. I’m just a vessel sent here by God to entertain the masses, from whatever platform is available.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
B Daht is an Entertainer, Content Creator, Host and Master Engager. My journey is one of constant ascension. Of course I’ve had hiccups along the way but my mothers strength and persistence runs through my veins. My mother raised my 2 siblings and I as a nail tech. Nobody NEEDS to get their nails done, that’s a luxury. The hustle she needed to raise 3 children “selling air” is AVENGER SUPER POWER LEVELS!!
B Daht started as Brian McLaughlin at Winston Salem State University in Fall of 2000. In these last 22 years I’ve become a beacon of funny and entertainment under the moniker B Daht.
I started by hosting shows at WSSU. The Mozik Modeling Show was the 1st, with my sister Kenita Upchurch, from there it was: Talent Shows, Step Shows, Comedy Shows, Awards Banquets, didn’t matter, if there was an event, B Daht was the Host. I was always the guy with no problems talking in front of people. My senior superlative in high school was “Most Funny” so to see the heights I’ve climbed through the years isn’t a surprise as much as a celebration.
Not only did I host shows, but I loved being around sports. Wasn’t always the most athletic, but I love competition. So when my friend Willie, who played tuba in the band, asked if I wanted to MC their halftime performances I immediately jumped on it because it meant I got to go to all the football games! Not to mention, The Chancellor at the time had saw me hosting events and asked if I would be interested in doing PA for the Home Football Games. Also-freaking-lutely!
I need to graduate, so I need an internship. 102JAMZ was the hottest station in North Carolina and they were looking for interns. One I got in that building they couldn’t make me leave! I was addicted. I was at every event. Helping every jock. Going to get jocks lunch and breakfast. It was the most fun ever!! Next thing you now, Brian McLaughlin is The PA Announcer for the University he attends (football and basketball), he’s the comedian on the number 1 morning show in the market, he’s hosting every event on campus and off… and it’s just 2005.
I eventually make 3 Seasons of WildnOut, get on HBO with Walter Latham’s Comedy After Dark, Created the Freestyle Funny Comedy Show that showcased stars like Chico Bean, Darren Brand & Drankins, all heavyweights in the field of Comedy currently. I made appearances on Hood Adjacent on Comedy Central with James Davis. I’ve successfully merged my entertainment with sports being the PA Announcer for the Greensboro Swarm, WSSU Football, and the Official 6th Man for UNC Basketball as their Arena Host. I’m also a content creator and created a podcast with black facts, #IDKMYDE that had 3 million downloads its 1st month.
I don’t know how long this was supposed to be, so I’ll stop here…
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When most of my friends visit they want to do the touristy stuff so we MUST hit Roscoe’s, then I’ll take em to Malibu, I have a couple friends in Calabassas so we can head that way. Most of the homies are Nipsey Hussle fans so we gotta hit The Marathon Store. They swear they wanna stay in shape so I’ll take em to Runyan Canyon and watch their tongues drag up and down the mountain. Venice Beach is a destination so they can see them strong dudes on the money bars and all the other bizarre theatrics. Hollywood Walk of Stars is a must see but I can’t take em on the House Tours cause fools might try to keep the address and come back to sell girl scout cookies or something.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
To My Wife, Carla and My Kids, Izayah and Riyen. I’m a better Person because of these 3 people. My job and promise is to attain all the desires of our hearts according to God’s Will. I Love Y’all.
To My Mother, Irene, My siblings, Melyssa & Jeff: I’m the Person I am because of the foundation that was put down by the 4 of Us. RenyP is the strongest woman I know & I feel that strength and perseverance in Myself daily. Thank You, Ma.
