We had the good fortune of connecting with Manuel Borrero and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Manuel, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think that taking risks is something that we all have to face at some point in our lives to get us out of our comfort zones. If you always remain where you are comfortable you will never reap the benefits of personal growth. There are only 2 outcomes from taking a risk; success or failure. I have learned not to be afraid of failure because they have helped me to be where I am today. You have to fail to succeed and you have to risk to win. Do not expect to win without failing at some point along the journey.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
UniverseAR is an augmented reality (AR) agency designed to create virtual experiences on social media platforms that allow the user to immerse themselves into an alternate reality. We utilize AR to educate, advertise, and create fun experiences for the user.
Character design is one of the skills that I have developed over the last few years and I am very proud of what I have been able create.
Getting to where I am today was not an easy process. It required a lot hustle and self-motivation to teach myself new skills in an industry I had no experience in. Even when there was no work available, I continued to create and learn to expand my portfolio.
I am never afraid of new beginnings. I am an immigrant that came to the United States with a medical background but now I am working in augmented reality. To succeed we have to be willing to adapt and learn new things.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
LA is a wonderful place filled with opportunity. I love to go on hikes and spend time at the beach. Runyon Canyon is a quick and easy hike that allows me to decompress after a long day. I like to walk around Melrose Place on an Sunday morning and grab a coffee while I check out the local farmers market.
I am a big fan of Mexican food, and there is a great spot called Tu Madre on Santa Monica Blvd. I highly recommend their margaritas! I also like to walk down Fairfax and get pasta at my favorite Italian spot, Jon and Vinny’s. In LA, the options are truly endless.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The support from my family, especially my mother has helped me to be where I am today. She has supported me in every decision I have made, no matter what the outcome is. She is always there for me and she is truly my best friend. Growing up I had her as an example to follow. She has always been a very dedicated mother and has taught me to never give up. I love you mom!
