Meet Baby Brat: Musician

We had the good fortune of connecting with Baby Brat and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Baby, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Baby Brat is my new artist name and I thought of starting this new project in order to separate my music from my acting life. I often write from a place of fiction in my songs, through my alter-ego, so it felt right to separate her from myself. The name Baby Brat took me so long to come up with though! I knew the name had to describe my future music perfectly, so I spent a week straight brainstorming ideas with my mom & friends.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a singer, songwriter, rapper and producer. But most people know me as an actress from the Netflix show Degrassi: Next Class. Although I’ve been releasing music for 5 years, I’ve decided to create a whole new music project with a whole new persona. As an actress, I love playing characters and I love theatrical art. With this new project I’m merging my two passions by creating my own dream character to play, my alter-ego: Baby Brat.
I wanted to give myself creative freedom to explore narratives outside my own experiences and opinions. Baby Brat has been in the making for 2 years and she’s a total bad ass b*tch! She’s evil, ruthless, and narcissistic. Someone once described the music as “cheerleader-demon-pop” and it’s totally accurate! Pop foundations with elements of punk and rap.
Baby Brat is going to be taking over my music from here on out by murdering Soma Chhaya in my next music video. To commemorate the end of my career as Soma, I’m going to be hosting a virtual funeral and premiere the video. Fans will have a chance to connect with me and meet Baby Brat for the first time! You can stay tuned for updates on my social media.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Okay, ready?
1. Eat as much vegan cuisine as possible. I.e., Monty’s Good Burger, Crossroads, Veggie Grill, Gracias Madre, Sage and Pura Vita.
2. HIKES! Griffith and Runyon Canyon.
3. Live music (when we can again). Madame Siam, Hi-hat, Echoplex, Dance Yourself Clean, Moroccan lounge and School Night
4. Beach… any of them!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a shout out to Skip Curtis. Skip is a multi hyphenate with his hands in every aspect of the music industry. He has mentored me this past year and helped me discover my potential as an artist. The countless advice, brainstorming, writing, emails and encouragement is not lost on me. And of course like to thank my parents for always believing in me.
