We had the good fortune of connecting with Barbara Balossi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Barbara, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
A friend introduced me to the work of Maria Montessori. Maria Montessori was an Italian doctor and educator in the early 20th century. I read The Absorbent Mind when I was pregnant with my first child. This book transformed my perspective on human development.

Montessori helped me see the miraculous nature of each of us. As a parent, rather than dictating how I should respond to my child’s needs, I learned to follow my children’s cues. I read through most of Montessori’s writings, but this wasn’t enough! I went on to complete a graduate degree in Montessori education.

My Montessori teacher training and studies informed every aspect of my early parenting and still does to this day.

What should our readers know about your business?
Each realtor brings something unique to their work. When you hire an agent, you’re hiring their intellect, their expertise, their insight, their creativity, and their experience. Real estate agents aren’t commodities. We’re each different.

I bring a sense of openness, wonder, and creativity to my work with each client.

I’ve successfully closed hundreds of home sales for my clients over the years. Some were extraordinarily complex, while others were simple and straight-forward. I understand contracts, negotiations, finance, marketing, communication, networking, and sales—each at a high level.

And I also approach my life and my work with a beginner’s mindset. I don’t take anything or anyone for granted.

I live and work in a state of curiosity.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Fun question!

Day 1: We’d get up early and head to Heisler Park in Laguna Beach with my dog, Holly. I’d take them along the walking path and up and down into the coves. We’d find a favorite spot or two on the beach to sit awhile and take in the beauty. Then we’d walk to grab breakfast at Kitchen in the Canyon. (My favorite is the garden omelet.) Then we’d walk around town, shop and visit the Laguna Beach art galleries. For lunch, we’d head to Active Culture for a Wholesome Bowl (so good!). After lunch, we’d stop by and say hello to Tomi and Rene at Laguna Coffee Company. We’d pick up some groceries at Mercado Laguna and head home to cook dinner.

Day 2: We’d head to San Juan Capistrano and walk around Los Rios. We’d grab a coffee at Hidden House Coffee and lunch at Ramos House. In the afternoon, we’d head to Aliso and Woods Canyon Wilderness Park and hike a few miles. Then we’d rest and go to Starfish in Laguna Beach for the Opium Hour specials. To complete a great day, we’d enjoy a sunset walk at Treasure Island Park overlooking the ocean. And – of course – a stop at Gelato Paradiso on the way home.

Day 3: We’d start the morning with a walk on the beach path in San Clemente and then we’d visit Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens. If hitting the San Clemente outlet malls sounds fun, we’d do that. And we might also visit the Active Culture in San Clemente to compare notes!

From there, I’d offer a list of ideas and let my friend choose. We could visit Lido Peninsula in Newport or The Camp in Costa Mesa. We could check out OId Town Orange or walk the Dana Point Harbor. Maybe a sunset walk at Crystal Cove State Park sounds fun. Or we spend a day at the Orange County Museum of Art.

There’s so much we could do and see!

Who else deserves some recognition for your success?
I’m a voracious reader of personal development and other non-fiction books. Most recently, I’ve been steeping in Rick Rubin’s new book The Creative Act. Business, the real estate business included, is at its best when it’s an expression of connected creativity. This book is a beautiful read and self-study.

Last year, I completed a training program for transformational coaching through the Center for Transformational Coaching. This was a life changing experience and informs how I serve my clients daily. This program was developed by Leon VanderPol and is modeled after his wonderful book: A Shift in Being.

Going further back in time to my initiation into real estate 17 years ago, I am grateful to my first broker, Jon Mendelson. Jon trained me as a professional, not a salesperson. In fact, there was no selling discussed until I knew my contracts and paperwork backwards and forwards. Jon taught me that sales were a byproduct of being a great agent – not the other way around.
