We had the good fortune of connecting with Barbara Chavez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Barbara, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“All good things are wild and free.” – Henry David Thoreau This quote has always brought to mind my favorite animal, the giraffe. You would think it would be a bee, but the giraffe has always resonated with me. The giraffe is wild and free, moving gracefully, yet fierce if need be. Always looking forward and standing tall.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe what sets me apart as a Mental Health Therapist, Assessor, and Professor from others is my authenticity in every interaction with my clients, their families and my students. I understand that in each of my positions, I encompass as level of authority as a professional and I always want to ensure that each person’s interaction is as positive, supportive and encouraging as possible. For my students, they are my future colleagues and I believe that in helping them in their paths to become therapists, I should model appropriate behavior and respect without being an authoritarian. Getting where I am today professionally has not been without its challenges, but each detour clearly had a purpose and each detour has brought the most amazing people and opportunities my way. I overcame the challenges by learning to not only ask for but accept help – one of the biggest lessons I have learned – as well as the encouragement and support of my family and friends. All of these experiences led me to the idea of PsycholoBees where I have been so fortunate to build community across the platforms but also meet amazing people along the way. I want the world to know that PsycholoBees is a gateway to mental health education, resources and connections. PsycholoBees is only part of my story and my story is far from over.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my family. My mother, brother and by the time this is published, my new husband. You are always so supportive and encouraging and my success is driven by your belief in me.
