We had the good fortune of connecting with Bec Morris and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bec, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursue my creative career to inspire others in the most supportive, positive and committed way. Visual artistry like dance and overall creative direction, allows the artist/brand to come alive in front of your eyes. The visual aspect of energy is what the audience is drawn to – high energy, stylization within the body, embellishing emotions… and just great entertainment.
I make people smile, laugh and cheer and hopefully inspire others to work hard to achieve their own dreams.

I live my life in this industry because I truly love it. I adore collaborating with directors and artists to make their vision come alive. I love this process. – the part no one sees and yet is vital for every creative process.
Also seeing and feeling the excitement of when it’s coming together. And my favorite part: when the artist/director’s eyes light up with joy and are overwhelmed by my creation because finally all the pieces have come together… I live for that!

Bringing light and joy to the world is why I pursue this career.
As Beyoncé sung, “ I will leave my mark so everyone will know I was here”

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a choreographer and creative director, I strive to connect the dots between the director, artist, brand, fans and whatever medium we use (stage, camera, etc). My job is to make everything make sense to the viewer; eg. What the lyrics and music are emoting, the visual needs to connect to that.

I set myself apart by ensuring I take my own ego and steps out of the equation. It’s not necessarily about what I think the coolest choreography would be for the project. There is much more to it than that. Maybe it doesn’t need any choreography. Maybe it needs stillness. Perhaps the artist isn’t comfortable so instead of pushing, I adjust.
Overall in the work place I’m all about being flexible, hard working, organized and committed to the final product.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in the Valley in LA. So I’d definitely start with a brunch at Aroma Cafe. Maybe a hike beforehand to Wisdom Tree if my friend is up to it (because I always am!).
I’d take them to American Glendale for a bit of shopping (even though the Grove is more ‘the place to be’ I think Americana is great because it’s less busy and just as pretty).
Also would have to visit my local taco truck (Tacos Palacios), Rustic Spoon, Granville and maybe a vegan spot if they are up to it (Sugar Taco or Sun Cafe).

Also a big list is Smorgusburg on a Sunday. Wow. Food galore!
Of course I’d visit a beach – maybe Manhattan or somewhere in that area. To be honest, if my friend was coming from Australia i mightn’t bother… our beaches are nicer 😉

I’m not a big drinker or a fancy dinner girl but other places I’d definitely choose from would be Verse, FireFly, EPLP, Taisho,

And finally, being a sneaker head, we are heading to The Mag Park in Burbank or Feature Calabasas.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My person to shout out is the ever talented Ivan Righini – professional figure skater and choreographer. He’s a 4 time Italian Champion with thousands of huge production shows under his belt. This hard work, creativity, talent and dedication inspires me daily!

Also shouting out Share Your Asian Story. These wonderful women have a wonderful platform on IG that highlights the careers of people within the AAPI community. They have done a series on me and I recently choreographed a performance for their LA show.
We need more people like this to shed knowledge and opening up the world to our culture.
