We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabriel Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gabriel, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work life balance is something that is very vital for the success of an entrepreneur. In the beginning stages of a new venture this is often overlooked because we get so caught up in the startup phase of what we decide to pursue. We work hard from the beginning stage to the launch that we really overlook the small benefit of having a good work life balance. Overlooking such a priority can be detrimental to our lives without question. I found myself running on the hamster wheel and pushing to the point of stress, doubt and overall exhaustion. I was putting in so much time trying to bring my dreams to fruition that I literally didn’t have a life. I was just doing way too much because when I didn’t see the results from the work I was putting in. It bought overwhelming feelings of disappointment. This also led to a hospital visit which bought a dose of reality to me.
I finally got to the point of putting my sanity, health and overall happiness to the forefront of my life. I started to put myself on a schedule for building my business and this helped tremendously because I got to build my empire and enjoy my family. Putting myself on a schedule also gave me a better sense of control and structure over both the business and my life. We often overlook the needs of the ones that love us the most because we’re so focused on the business and this could have a tragic ending for all parties.
This is why I started to take vacations more with my beautiful wife. Spend time with my beautiful children and more importantly give my mind and myself a break. I felt the biggest relief once I created work life balance for myself and my family did as well. Not just that, but God ultimately rewarded me for making such adjustments and every goal that I overworked for in the beginning came with ease. This taught me that no matter what just take it easy and always remember that the phone and laptop need a break when you have more important priorities like yourself and family. Business hours are when business is to be conducted and our mental health and physical state exist 24 hours so we should have a great balance to achieve the ultimate success in both business and life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m an author, speaker and entrepreneur. I wrote my first book titled The Definition during a very dark time of my life. I was homeless and had nothing but a disconnected Apple iPhone and a whole lot of confusion. I wrote my self help book based on events of my life in the memo section of my iPhone and this changed my life! The book led to my very fruitful and positive partnership with GoDaddy. I also gained the support and a partnership with House of Mera which is a luxury clothing brand in Los Angeles. The book also led to very rewarding speaking engagements at schools and communities throughout Los Angeles. There were plenty of challenges that threatened the success of the path I chose as a writer. Being homeless alone was definitely very discouraging but I knew in my heart that if I finished the book. I’ll in fact be blessed for my hard work naturally and I definitely was.
There were plenty of lessons I learned along the way but I’m gonna touch on two. The first is my monicker which is “E.B.O” which is short for Envision, Believe and Obtain. You have to envision the end result you want. You have to believe whole heartedly that you deserve it. With doing both; it’ll make it easy for you to obtain it.
The second lesson I learned was that “when you have nothing is when you’ll discover you have everything it takes to actually make it.” If you have nothing and are at the bottom then there’s only one way to go and that’s up. These two ideals I created actually is what got me through it all and to the success I am today.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spots in the city are Downtown Los Angeles and Beverly Hills.

I’d really recommend the Arts District for the great graffiti and culture sprawled through the area.
The Fashion District is also another favorite of mine because everything is at your fingertips if you love fashion and I certainly do!
The Grove in Beverly Hills is another favorite of mine because of the restaurants, shopping and overall community.
Melrose Place is also in Beverly Hills and has a unlimited selection of cool boutiques, eateries and people.
My favorite restaurant is Maggiano’s located in The Grove and I’d definitely take a guest there to enjoy because of the ambiance.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I definitely have to thank Allah first for all of the trials and tests that made me fit for such a journey. Without such tests, I couldn’t have possibly been conditioned for the journey of achieving success to this magnitude. I will always and forever thank my beautiful children Zyanne, Lauren, Gabe Jr and Kennedy Smith because at my lowest points of doubt. They were in fact my encouragement for me to push and make it. I have to thank GoDaddy for the life changing partnership! GoDaddy seen the greatness in me that I didn’t see at the time and bout me to the forefront and it’s changed my life forever. Last but not least. I have to thank my manager and wife Tymera Finley. Words cannot describe the gratitude that I have for your love, support and encouragement that you bless me with. At times of doubt, fear and exhaustion. You were my biggest cheerleader for me to push forward and get what’s mine and I thank you.
