We had the good fortune of connecting with HC Stockwell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi HC, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I didn’t. It chose me. For a long time I’ve been running from creating and performing, because corporate marketing has taught me from a very young age and the people around me, that the majority don’t want to see heavy-set white women in performance rolls. You need to be thin. So, most of my life I was running from this God-given talent because of how I was conditioned in society and how others viewed me. Kids can be cruel and adults even worse. So, within the past 8 years I’ve pushed back against societies norms and decided to listen to my inner voice. It’s allowing me to connect with other people, them with me. When I’m not on the right path in life, I hear that little voice often saying “what the hell are you doing!?!?”

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a singer/songwriter/music producer/sound engineer. Writing my own music is how I can express myself and connect with other people. I have a theory, if I can feel what I am creating, others will feel it too. Almost anyone can make a beat nowadays, but we as artists  need to connect to the music a bit deeper than a beat.

So, my goal over the last year has been to create music and connect profoundly with every piece I write. I will be releasing an album under the band “Stockwell” this year and a video/single release regarding social injustice, in August, under my solo work The HC. Music venues are starting to come alive again and I will be performing a solo acoustic set at Bar 20 in the Grafton on Sunset Hotel in West Hollywood on July 17, 2021 and for The Sunday Night Review at the Hotel Cafe on July 25, 2021 doing a couple of Pearl Jam covers.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Los Angeles. I’m a bit eccentric and so are my friends. So “The Hollywood Forever” Cemetery is amazing. A person could spend a whole day there. Have a picnic, hangout and walk around the grave stones and enjoying the fountains and flowers. Griffith Observatory and park. Up Laurel Canyon to Mullholland Drive to see the city, both day and night views are spectacular! I’d go to Gower St. off of Franklin to see the “Hollywood” sign, because hiking-up a steep grade without sun shade is no fun. Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach. Ride the tram up to The Getty Museum and take in some art and lunch. Maybe spend some time at the tar pits and LACMA on the Miracle Mile, The Hollywood Walk of Fame, The Museum of Death, and possibly The Cecil Hotel downtown.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My educators. I wouldn’t be here without them. Almost every single teacher I have had, has made some kind of impact on me. In my youth I wasn’t the best student, hell, even college I wasn’t the best student. We all have lives and sometimes they are chaotic, and most teachers understand this, as their lives are sometimes chaotic too. We are all people learning from each other while on different types of roller-coasters crossing paths at different velocities.

I can remember every single music instructor I have had, and owe them my gratitude. When passion collides with education, both the teacher and the pupil blossoms. My educators were my encouragement, and when I was focused I thrived.

So, here is a list of schools I want to shout-out out that taught me.

Riverview Elementary School – Wichita KS
Walnut Elementary School – Emporia KS
Lowther Middle School – Emporia KS
Augusta Middle School – Augusta KS
Wichita State University – Wichita KS
The Art Institute of California – San Franciso, CA
