We had the good fortune of connecting with Bella Alubo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bella, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
I think one never knows what the correct answer is to keep going or to give up. I believe that everything I set my mind to is achievable & it doesn’t mean there are no challenges, it doesn’t mean i’ll ever be able to see tomorrow or know what happens next. I think everyone has to decide for themselves whether to go on or to stop because they’re both very difficult choices. You just have to pick your struggle & stick to it. No one woke up knowing that something will definitely happen for them, we have to move by faith. Hoping is the fire that keeps the world going. There’s no knowing, there’s just believing & doing.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I was born & raised in a small Nigerian town called Jos which is one of the coldest parts of the country. The temperature & the natural resources could be why there’s always been a notable foreign presence aaand that could be why there’s a very strong hip-hop culture. nigerian rappers like the Chocboiz grew up here & the town has produced lots of other musicians. everyone just said it’s something in the water LOL. so not surprisingly, i started music as a rapper. I’m now a singer but one thing that has stayed consistent is my journaling-type feelings-y writing. My lyrics are honest, vulnerable & relatable to most emotional people. I got a bit of sound cloud popularity in my zone nearly a decade ago & got scouted & signed to a Nigerian record label which turned out to essentially be fraudulent. I have a song with over 5 million plays on spotify called ‘Tropicana Fruit Juice’ which i’ve never gotten a dime of royalties on, along with all other songs released with them. I plan to legally pursue it when i’m in a better place.
I’m grateful to Mr Eazi & his Empawa company for funding my 1st music video after i left the record label & providing me with very much needed support at the time.
I’m currently still indie & loving it. my manager is a 21 year old called Folami Ayedun & he’s the most proactive person I know. we’ve put out 2 projects called Summer’s Over & Popstar. We’re currently working on an album with diverse genres like afrobeat & reggae.
I’m excited & very grateful to my fans. I’ve learnt perseverance, forgiveness, hard work & adaptation. I’d like the world to remember me as someone who continues to love regardless of how cold the world gets. Love is the answer to everything.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In Jos Nigeria (my hometown). The museum is a must see. Next is the wildlife park with a really sweet elephant called Ellie. i really love to hangout at lamingo lakes & my favourite love to eat is The Net Cafe. Nono da fura (it’s kinda like yoghurt & cheese at the same time with something like granola balls in it) is my favourite thing to eat. best of its off the street!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout goes to my social media followers. I call my fans #reBellaz. They were the 1st to affirm my sound cloud freestyles 9 years ago & to make me feel like being a musician was a feasible career choice for me. Everyone who shows me love on social media deserves credit for my recognition since it played a big role in everyone of my breakthroughs
