We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Diaz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
Simple the answer will always be KEEP GOING. You’re tired? Keep going. You aren’t seeing too much success yet? Keep going! Because as long as you press forward and learn form your mistakes you will succeed. A lot of small businesses get hung up on the fact that there is someone’s else out there doing exactly what they do. Sometimes they are more successful and sometimes they aren’t. The point is NOBODY is YOU, and nobody is going to promote and run your business the way you do. You are a unique mind and that’s something to be so very proud of. I don’t care if there are 100 people in my area doing what I do, I will alway give my work 110% and promote it like it’s the only thing on the block. Successful businesses thrive by ignoring the competition and finding their groove. Once you find what works for your business—believe me it takes time—you’ll be so proud of what you can accomplish.
Since my last interview with ShoutoutLA my business has flourished even in this pandemic. I’ve adapted and rolled with the punches and I am so exited for what I’ve got coming around the corner. As long as I don’t give up on myself I know my business will go far. I have since then reopened my Etsy shop, began a T-shirts line and added so many more tangible items to my once strictly hand calligraphy business. I have even sent some of my items to customers in Canada! The limit simply does not exist in my world. Optimism is key to being a small business in the corporate run world.
Being a mother of two young boys and pulling away from a 9-5 cushion job hasn’t been easy. The days are long and the night seven longer but I know my hard work will pay off in the end. To every small biz, especially moms and women owned small businesses out there “You Can. You Are. You Will.” You might not win today but eventually you WILL.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets The Little Bee &Me apart from others is me. I have a way of supporting those around me to where my name comes up when they speak about their brand. I have creating some many friendships along my business journey that most of my commissions come directly from referrals. A customer turned friend will refer me as soon as they hear of someone needing assistance with their their business or craft.
I am most proud of my willingness to try something new whenever the occasion presents itself. I am often asked to do things I’ve event done before and almost always accept the challenge. I have realized that you can simply stay in your comfort zone to be a success. YouTube and TikTok have been the biggest help when it comes to learning something new for a customer. The faith my customers have in me as will is something I hold dear. I’ve been given creative reign in most of my collaborative works and that makes me so incredibly happy.
I got where I am today by the support of complete strangers as well as my close family and friends. They have always helped me get things done and cheered me on when I wanted to quit. It hasn’t been easy at all especially with the t-shirt line. I have learned what to buy and what to stay away from when getting shirts printed. I have learned to ask other businesses for help and guidance and not be ashamed or feel like I am stealing ideas. The commute have found on instagram is truly a blessing and aid to my success.
I have learned to listen to others opinions as well as to be stern in charging my WORTH. Knowing when to give a discount and when to demand full price has been a game changer. You have to be strong in your work and be okay with losing a customer or two because your prices are not in their range. I’ve learned that they eventually come back around or refer your services to another.
I want the world to know that my business,The Little Bee &Me, won’t be litter for long. I’ve chosen a few statements to represent my brand and to ultimately bring me the success I am working for. “Small Business. Big Hustle” is the first—meaning I put 110% into every piece of art and that I will go above and beyond for my business and those around me to thrive. And lastly “You Can. You Are. You Will,”—meaning you can do anything you put your kind to. You are more than enough, never let someone tell you that you can’t do something you’re passionate about. You Will succeed.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In a pre COVID world I would definitely take my friend to places such as Graham’s BBQ for a Friday fish fry deal! We’d enjoy food sampling at the Riverside Food Lab and Haven Marker in Ontario, CA. These spots hold some amazing sweet treats and diverse food options. Being that I am in Moreno Valley I have access to so many local food spots. On the weekend I’d also take a trip down the street of Perris Blvd and grab some papusa’s and tacos from local pop up taco vendors that meet every Thursday-Saturday night.
A nice walk around downtown riverside is a must as well. They’ve got amazing street art that I have also featured in my t-shirts launch. There is an alley of beautiful metal butterflies reaching from the start of the alley all the way down to the end. Most allies near down town Riverside are filled with some type of graffiti and metal art.
Since we are super close is also take them to Victoria Gardens to browse the shops and have a day full of vitamin D and outdoor fun. Living in a are that is within arms reach of outdoor shopping and beach’s has its perks! I’d take them down to the beach as well for a day or two! We’d enjoy so many places in our week of fun!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First off My Family, they have supplied me with so many tools to become what I am today. Wether it’s and iPad I would never bring myself to purchase or babysitting so that I can prepare for a PopUp. My family has always supported my dreams and pushed me along when I wanted to take a break.
My friends Kiana and Alexis, who have been my cheerleaders this entire time and even became a business parent we of mine on another venture! These girls have always been there to build me up when I thought I was breaking.
To my instagram sisterhood! You know who you are! Thank you all so much for the unwavering faith and support in me and my small business. I wish nothing but blessings on blessings for you all! Keisha especially—who pushed me almost 2 years ago to be more technologically present! You Ladies ARE AMAZING!
