We had the good fortune of connecting with Bella Skyller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bella, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I like to look at risks as opportunities to learn, grow and expand instead of something scary and negative. I think that a lot of people turns down o lot of great opportunities and chances because there’s risks involved. I believe that the bigger risk, the bigger the reward is in the end. Taking risks has always been a part of my journey, and I like to put myself on the edge to remind myself that everything is possible, and that taking risks are a part of that. Risks has played a big role in my life and career. Three years ago I decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue my dream in music. I left my comfort zone, my family and friend to start my career on the other side of the planet. I knew when I jumped on that plane that my new life in Los Angeles would include a lot of risks, but at that point I had no knowledge about it and I was only excited to see where it would take me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
For as long as I can remember I have always dreamed about making music and performing on stages infront of a screaming crowd. Growing up, I was always surrounded by music. My parents had a music room in the house with my dads guitars and my moms piano and I remember always being so fascinated about it. I was always the only one among my friends that had a great interest in music and therefore I sometimes felt like an outsider. I didn’t really have anyone to share my dream with. I started playing instruments and writing songs in a very young age and when I was old enough I joined my dad and his band as the lead singer and guitarist. Our cover band made me realise that music was really everything I wanted to do for the rest of my life, but I didn’t know where to start. I moved to Los Angeles three years ago to study business, but I met so many people in the music industry that inspired me to chase my dream in music. Therefore, I decided to study music in Hollywood and dig deep into what I love the most and put my stamp on the highly competitive pop-music scene. I met so many incredible people that had the same goals and dreams and I finally felt like I belonged. I started writing more songs and started working with a lot of great people. Today I’m an independent artist that makes pop music that will tell the tale of love in its many forms. From physical and romantic to platonic or obsessive. You will learn about self-love, empowerment and the love I have for my life as a restless girl. I write from my own life experiences, making my story-telling songs extremely personal and intimate. I love to write dark lyrics with a lot of attitude and combine it with joyful and bright sounds. I would describe my musical style as being distinctive yet contemporary. In order to create such a unique sound, I wanted to draw inspiration from multiple of my favourite genres. For the past year I have been working on my upcoming EP and singles that are scheduled for release this year. The EP consists of four songs, each song cleverly intertwined telling alluring stories of specific moments in my life.
Being an independent artist is not easy, I have made a lot of mistakes but I have also learned from them. One thing that I have learned along the way is to believe in yourself, because if you don’t believe in yourself, who would? Surround yourself with people that truly wants to help you and people that you trust.
There will always be people judging you, but just keep on doing your thing because in the end, that’s what makes YOU happy, and that’s the most important thing.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have so many favourite places in LA. One of my favourite things to do is to go to the ocean, it reminds me of my home in Sweden a lot. Living in a big city like LA can sometimes be overwhelming and I tend to find some peace by the ocean. I absolutely love Malibu and I take all my friends there when they visit me. What I love about Malibu is the beach, all the amazing restaurants but also all their different wine tasing spots. I love that you can get a taste of the nature but still its not far away from the city. I also love going to Venice beach to eat at White Shark, they have the best food. Such a nice place where you can sit outside and watch people walk past. I would also bring my best friend to Melrose. I love walking in and out of all the stores, grab a nice lunch at Pink Tacos and look at all the cool street art. One of my favourite things to do every Sunday is to go to Melrose Trading Post, one of the best flea markets in West Hollywood. Since I’m obsessed with vintage clothes, live music and great food this is the perfect place to spend your Sundays at.
I would also spend some time with my best friend at different restaurants around West Hollywood. One of my favourite lunch spots is Joan’s on the third. They have delicious salads and sandwiches, and I like to take a walk there and enjoy 3rd street. Toca Madera and Zinqué are two great restaurants located on 3rd street that I would take my friend to as well. On the way home we would probably stop at The grove to grab a coffee or drive to Cha Cha Matcha. There are a lot of nice parks in the West Hollywood area, perfect for either morning walks, workout or just to enjoy the sun.
For drinks in the evening I would take my friend to a nice rooftop bar, or a nice bar in the area. Me and my friends have spent many nights at E.P&L.P, Ysabel, Saddle Ranch, Gracias Madre, The Bungalow, Mama Shelter, The Phoenix and so many more fun places.
I also enjoy cooking at home, sit outside on the patio, drink some wine and jam on the guitar and just enjoy the sunset.
Since I’m a musician I would like to take my friend to the different studios where I usually work at. My favourite studio is located in Sherman Oaks and it’s a close friend who has the studio.
Los Angeles has so many nice places to visit, I don’t think one week would be enough for my best friend to see everything the city has to offer.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There has been a lot of people involved on my journey, both family and friends that has been helping me and supporting me from the beginning, but there’s one person in particular that helped me get to where I am today. John Samuel Gerhart is not only my producer and co-writer, but also a great friend. I had the opportunity to talk to him for the first time during a meeting with Mantik Music Group, and I’m forever grateful for that. We started working together more than a year ago and ever since then we have been creating magic together. His not only the best producer and songwriter, but an incredible artist that makes amazing music, one of the most talented musicians I have ever met. He gives me the best confidence in the studio, in sessions and in my everyday life. He believes in me and my music and he supports me in every step of the way. He has a heart of gold, and brings light and happiness to every situation. I honestly don’t know what life would look like without him.
