We had the good fortune of connecting with Belva Chan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Belva, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
In 2016, I went to Hong Kong Design Institute studying Fashion Image Design and Photography. During the time in college, I found passion in photography so I started assisting the lecturers’ shoots outside of class. I was very lucking to be assisting on Harper Bazaar, New Balance, Elle… etc set when I first starting out and I fell in love of the of process from pre-production to post-production. I also got my first client during those time, and that gave me confidence to keep pursuing this path!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
One thing I get the most from new clients is they mentioned the models in my work are very natural and comfortable. I believe in creating a relaxing set for everyone, and I always encourage models to be themselves and do whatever that feels right to them. I have started out in Hong Kong, in 2020 Nov, I moved to LA. It was never easy to get to where I wanted, and it gets harder after the move. I had to work extra hard earn the oppertunities to assist on different sets, to learn the ropes here and to build connection. I have learnt how to utilised what I have to create the image I wanted. The most importantly is to figure out who I am. I love fashion photography, I love creating stunning images for all parties, and I love to have fun during shooting!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Dana Point Beach or Arrowhead!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Jeff Leung was on of the lecturer that took me on to his set, he also split his studio with me after I graduated so I have a space to work in and able to take on clients!
