We had the good fortune of connecting with Zakiya Murphy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Zakiya, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks is the only thing that brings any sort of flavor or excitement into my life. I believe that taking risks shows the universe (or whatever higher power you believe in) that you’re willing to trust the process of life and venture off into the unknown. Growing up, my life was pre-planned by my parents, community, church, etc. Whether that was an optimistic perspective or a pessimistic one. Technically speaking, I wasn’t supposed to make it this far in life on my own. I wasn’t raised to take risks. Still, taking that risk and moving across the country to a place that I’ve only seen on tv was the best decision that I’ve ever made for myself. I wanted to have a clear chance at starting my own life. Things are working out for me in an incredible way because I took initiative and control over my own life and destiny.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When I look back on my life as a whole, I realize now that I’ve always been an artist in some capacity. Whether that was ballet class, flute lessons, choir practice, band performances, makeup artist, photography, modeling, I’ve always been into creating and becoming art. I even have a BFA in Screenwriting. Still, I was never taught how to turn my art into a full time job. That wasn’t a possibility for someone like me growing up. Now, after moving to L.A., I’m on my way into the acting/entertainment world which I never thought I could get into. Yet, I love it whenever I get to work on set regardless of whether or not I’m in front of the camera. I don’t really find the process of booking gigs difficult. It truly is all about the energy you bring and how you carry yourself, especially when you’re a black woman. I know and believe that the right people have and will find me as I continue on with my journey. My best advice for anyone reading this: Just be yourself.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m probably the worst person to ask a question like this. I moved here in the middle of the pandemic, so I haven’t had the opportunity to explore the city. Even then, I’m highly focused on my finances and health. I was never really a party person, more of a kick back with close friends kind of girl.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Someone that I would love to shoutout is Jonathon Arthurs (@323.raw)! I’ve modeled for him on a photo series and he is an incredible photographer. He has a great eye and really knows how to capture the image as a whole. He really transports you through his imagery.
