We had the good fortune of connecting with Benjamín Perez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Benjamín, what is the most important factor behind your success?
As I reflect on the success of my work, I think about my family, I think about my journey, and I think about every person that has impacted me in my life. When I think about success, I can’t help to think about my experience as a first-generation and how self-doubt is still very present in my life. It prevents me at times to really see that I am actually reaching success. I struggle with that, but I am forever grateful with the amount of opportunities and beautiful messages I receive which makes me feel that I am making a difference in my own way. When I made the decision to put myself out there with social media, I never expected to be here 18 months later and be in this position. I would attribute that my success is because of my authenticity, intentionality, honesty, and passion.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The work that you see on my Instagram page and TikTok page: Perez The Advisor, is the work of all my life. It is a safe space and a real space for people to feel seen, heard, included, and empowered. But, getting to this point has not been that easy. As a first-generation Latino, navigating the educational system really marked me and conditioned my experience. A lot of my struggles, feelings, accomplishments, and memories are what drives my work on social media. I work with students out of high school and I see that those experiences and feelings are being shared by them today. My responsibility is to be a resource, a mentor, a guide, a coach, and a friend to help them reach their purpose in life. I want to be the person for them that I did not have in college. Moreover, I also talk about my journey with mental health, my work towards healing my traumas, and my experiences as a first-generation professional. My approach is to be vulnerable and real with what I share. It is not easy being on the spotlight because of wanting to be perfect, but I am in the point of my life where that my imperfections are celebrated as well as my strengths. My creative work is the journey of my story and it’s dedicated to my community.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you’re visiting me then you know you will have a good time! I try to go above and beyond with hosting family and friends. I live in the Bay Area, so we have a lot of options. If possible, we would go to Santa Cruz and have a full day at the beach! I love the ocean, so that is a must. The next day we will drive up to San Francisco! SF has a very special place in my heart because it is beautiful and the food spots are everything. Then we would stay local in San Jose and go eat at Metro Balderas, best tacos al pastor in SJ. After we might go to Santana Row or downtown Campbell for some drinks! If possible, go to a sporting event such as the 49ers or the Warriors. Lastly, we will go up North to Wine Country and go wine tasting! The itinerary will be tiring, but definitely worth it!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This is beautiful. There are so many shoutouts that I could make, but I will focus on family. The first shoutout is to my wife Isabel. My life has never been the same because of her. She’s been by my side when I have been down, when I have struggled with my mental health, and when I fall into my own traumas. She has seen the best of me always and has believed in me even when the sun was shining somewhere else. Whenever I am on the spotlight I feel empowered because I know she is there looking at me. I have found happiness in my life and is by her side. My next shoutout is to my parents. They’re my first teachers, they’re my foundation, and they’re my purpose. My love for advising is because of my father and my love for helping others is because of my mother. I hope they’re proud of me because my success is theirs as well.
