Meet Berangere Altier | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Berangere Altier and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Berangere, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my own photography business was a natural evolution. Once I had enough experience and clients under my belt, I decided it made sense financially to open up a business in order to keep track of everything.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I fell in love with film photography in college. I could spend hours in the dark room. At the time, they didn’t have closing hours and we had 24h access to the dark rooms. I would often loose track of time and stay past midnight or until the chemical fumes got to be too much. I was living in the world of black and white and loving it. I got my first job as a sports photographer and had too learn the opposite of what I spent years learning. I was in the world of fast paced digital colored photography. I then went on to develop a clientele in the world of event photography. My biggest challenge was to balance my life as a fast paced photographer, getting bigger clients, spending more money on gear and making more money at the same time. But my true love still remains within the world of slow paced film photography. I would say that the biggest lesson I have learned is that what I like to photograph is rarely what will make me the most money, but it sometimes does, and the work I do with my bigger clients are within the realm of photography which I feel very lucky for because each job is so much fun and more importantly each job is different. There is never a dull moment on the job.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When I moved to Los Angeles I found it incredibly hard to relate to the life out here. It can be isolating and overwhelming because of how big it is. It is now my ultimate favorite city. There is so much to discover even after having lived a decade here. If my best friend was here I would probably take them on a walk to get a coffee and pastry in Atwater village at Proof Bakery. I would then head to highland park to visit some of the vintage shops and walk in the neighborhood. I would take them to get a lunch on York at Joy for a dandan noodle, a taro milk tea and the best mochi desert. I would also visit the Avenue 26 taco stands in Downtown Los Angeles for a highly local experience and the best tacos in town. I would also take them to Korean Town for some intestines and follow up with karaoke. I would also take them to Bishop or Mammoth for a climbing/snowboarding experience and I would take them to Joshua Tree for a beautiful night of camping under the stars with a little stop in pioneer town for some ribs and a cowboy experience!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my creative journey to Hayao Miyazaki. He was an early inspiration in my early teen years. His beautiful world of animation gave me the strength to take risks and choose the world of creativity instead of choosing a safer path.
